I've noticed this a while back:

Why does this generate code like:

I mean, it's just a waste of bandwidth, it does not have any extra advantages over just using <b>t</b>est, and most important: you can't highlight parts of a word without it looking split up...
So, fix-it-fury, can you fix it?

Btw, I think it's more the return between the <span> tags which causes the extra space than the fact that <span> is used...
