What is it?

It's happening to me randomly enough that I'm not sure what program may be doing this. Looking at the picture, that little blue icon, maybe a turtle or an umbrella, pops up in my taskbar on occasion. I've rarely got less than five or six programs open so I've having a hard time trying to figure out what it is. As soon as I place my mouse over it, it disappears. I've left the Task Manager up to see if it comes up there but haven't seen anything drop in/out of the processes.

Nope. Built in crapola sound. This is a my work box.

Ok. I think it has something to do with Excel or Office. I've been keeping an ear out for it, as it makes a little popping sound when it comes up in the taskbar. Three times now, within a few seconds of opening Excel it'll make itself known. I've got version 2003 installed. Anyone here using this wonderful pos yet?

I don't have any backups scheduled locally and all backups on the server are of data located there.

I'm wondering though. I do a lot of backups of customer drives onto my system. Right now I have around eight or nine drives backed up. It could very well be some sort of virus. Doing a scan now. Should take the better part of an hour to do that on the 150GB of crap on this thing.

Trillian was set to set to send anonymous usage statistics back to it's home. I just unchecked that.

I just opened up a couple other Excel files and neither one of them seemed to prompt the little mystery guest.

I've looked around a bit, haven't found anything yet. Surely someone has seen that icon before?

When you first install some versions of Windows, a little thing appears in the system tray and if you click on it, it asks you if you want to participate with MS and send usage statistics back to them. I always say no and it never comes back. Wonder if that could have something to do with it. Or error reporting, that's another cute XP thing.

In the registry, if you navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

You'll find some stuff that runs at startup. I wouldn't just take anything out you don't recognize but you could look up anything suspicious in google. Other than that, don't have any other ideas right now. You're running Longhorn? Are there any support sites out there for people who beta tested?

Check if it appears when you start WMP. I had something like that, turned out it was a sound codec controller thingie that failed to terminate on WMP shutdown. Also, do a virus+spyware check with Norton, Spybot and Adaware, just in case.

Err, nevermind the first part, i was a little dumb and didn't check the other posts.

It is indeed a part of nVidia. What exactly it is doing I'm not usre, but it is related to the transperancy feature of nView. A little bubble window popped up telling what the hell it is......finally.
