Suggestions!

Woohoo! Have done budgeting and I figured out today that if i stay home and go to uni here, then i will be £2500 Richer at the end of the year if I don't go nuts. So I want to go on a kind of busmans holiday. Just a backpack full of stuff and the money in my pocket (well travellers cheques anyway!), But can't decide where to go, and what i'll need (papers visas immunisations etc.)

Was hoping my funds would stretch to europe or america, but i'm not sure, help / location suggestions would be much appreciated. :swing:

seriously, though... what sorta trip interests you? outdoors? city? a combination?
do you speak any languages besides English? are you adventurous or do you need reliable plumbing and electricity at all times?

the world's a great big place... if I had the money and time, I'd explore Eastern Europe... lots of history, some beautiful cities, but it hasn't been Americanized to death yet :D
 
The confluence sounds interesting actually, I only speak spanish and english and i prefer to hoof it, alone.

since you speak Spanish, why don't you check out Argentina? you can ski some of the longest runs in the world there in August, for instance... very diverse topography, and if you limit the amount of time you spend in the cities your money will travel further...but that's the case in every country I've ever been to...

Buenos Aires, Tierra del Fuego in Patagonia, Iguazu Falls in the north...

if I were you I'd definitely check out Argentina :swing:
 
Thanks, the only problem is i don't have the first clue about what to do... and how to do it, from packing to booking a flight etc, need to figure out how long i'm gone for and whether i should buy a return flight and risk losing my ticket/missing my plane, or buy seperate tickets, in which case i may not be able to afford to get home... will plan very carefully.
 
I'd spend some time browsing through guidebooks: Rough Guide, Lonely Planet and Time Out are all worth perusing.

there are also lots of websites that often have message boards attached with picks and pans posted by travellers that have been there

the planning is as much a part of the trip as the actual travelling, for me, and can be a lot of fun ;)

Just be careful not to leave any trace of your passing. Some of the areas she's talking about are almost totally unspoiled. ;)
 
If you are fluent in spanish come to Mexico.
Ancient cities (pyramids) like Uxmal, Teotihuacan, Palenque, Tulum, etc etc.
Or visit colonial cities like Guanajuato, Morelia, Mexico City, Leon or San Miguel de Allende.
 
Hmm. At the curent exchange rate 2800 pounds (what i have managed to budget for) Comes to 5,011.05 USD. So I think i'll be going for a month. (Oh yes Stew! You're not the only one who can travel!!!) That is if i'm sensible with my money this year. Argentina looks/sounds good, as do the national parks in North America.

I figure I can get around on train/bus in North America, plus i can already speak english so it would make my life easier so i think it would be wise to just explore north america.

Now all I need is an idea of where I'll be going, and an itinerary(sp?) Which I'm about to look up. Got a year to go yet, but god willing i might be able to get there earlier say march/april.

Will also need to put together a checklist of documents and other important things, once again help would be appreciated, also anyone who's done this before, if they could impart any knowledged i would be very grateful.
 
If you do wind up traveling in the States you'll want to investigate health insurance. Should something should happen and you need medical care it can be terribly expensive.

I'm still lobbying for Argentina, frankly. Mexico, as Luis says, would be good too.
 
Well, it's the first time im going to do it so I'm trying to make sure it goes off without a hitch, unfortunately all my websearches are proving to be fruitless, I'm trying to find maps ( easy enough ) and tourist information (easy enough again) and also tips to travelling (the hard one...) must just be putting my searches in the wrong context... :confused:

It depends upon what you wish to achieve. If being mugged in a back-alley is your cup of tea, I'd suggest South Bronx, in New York City, at around 2:12 AM. If you wish to *ugh* sight-see, then, by all means, pick a city...any city, go to Google and place the city name there. Make sure you link to the 'official' city website, or you could end up in Hoboken. :grinyes:
