Japanese perspective

It's hard to say here which side this whole "collision" thing actually worked better for.

Greenpeace certainly claims that the japanese were trying to divert attention from the slaughter, or at least manipulate what attention there already was -towards the impression that they were there, as they claim, for the purposes of "scientific research".

However the story would never have made it to mainstream media had there not been some sort of confrontation/conflict/drama to observe.

Its a pity world media barely bat an eyelid to such a serious environmental issue as it stands without waiting for some situation to arise and create a drama out of.

The fact whaling to such a barbaric and inhumane scale is still carried out, and the fact that nothing is being done to stop it in its tracks ( i mean, really truly stop it rather than 'condemn' it) is outrageous and what is a real and continuing contemporary tragedy.

Greenpeace often does close 'flyby' runs at whaling ships and oil ships... trying to distract them from their 'job'.

Greenpeace had been painting something on the side of the Whaling vessel. Must've ticked off the whalers, eh? Trying to ram a ship with 25 people onboard is a bit overboard though!

As for whaling...its a barbaric and anachronistic trade. What is gained from whaling can easily be synthesized or found elsewhere.

I don't find it humourous but I do find it disturbing that somebody would want to mandate how somebody else lives. I can see if it affects the first person in some way, so how is comercial whaling affecting tank girl?

Much like the affects from medicinal marijuana.

I personally find whaling to be an horrific trade so I vow never to do it. Feel better?

Painting something or cutting torch??? At sea, it pays to not wait & find out. Wanna play with the big boys, expect to get rammed.

If you need someone to explain that to you, then you must be a few marbles short or summit. Are you not concerned at the greater impact of whale extinction? Not only that, but if you remove one element from the equation, it will impact upon the environment (e.g. growth of plankton rates, tied in with Greenhouse gases).

There is a big diference between taking responsibility and being fool hearted and putting yourself and others in danger....

People put themselves and others in danger by whaling....other people try to do something about it. Do you have any talking points or can you only label other's points?

Let's put one thing in the clear. I love whales and dolphins. They're pretty much my favorite species. (far, far beyond humans). And I'd love nothing more than to have them safe from extinction. But the world has had extinctions of 80% of it's population and gotten along quite well without them.

In fact, religious fanatics have a helluva lot more reason to protest whale slaughter than left wing tree huggers do, if you stop and think about it.

Medicinal mary-jane is still far more effective as an anti-nauseate than any other product on the market today. I'm sure there are plenty of people who currently use it who would rather not.

As for whaling. There are few uses for whale hunting.

Whale meat to sell as whalemeal (bonemeal) to feed dogs, cats, pigs etc...the liquids, well...they're used as water-soluble vitamins but they've got issues with mercury levels because whales are at the top of the oceanic food chain. See here

So what does whaling have to do with the destruction of the Amazon or the use of fossel fuels.
