NAACP wants NASCAR to ban confederate flag

Officials of a South Florida branch of the NAACP say the organization could stage protests during NASCAR races in an effort to have the Confederate flag banned from events.

The Miami-Dade branch's leaders said they would first ask for help from NASCAR officials in banning the flag, but are prepared to begin contacting sponsors. Also under consideration are a boycott and a march during the season-ending race weekend at Homestead-Miami Motor Speedway, according to the South Florida Times.

Seems like that pesky First Amendment is really bugging the NAACP. If I want to fly the Confederate flag, or the American flag, or the Union Jack, or any other flag, there is no person in this country who can stop me.

I have no problem with the flag. Some of the people waving it need a foot broken off in their arse, but you can say the same thing about any flag being waved.

they drag this up every time they go to long without getting their name in the papers.

I have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, it's anyone's right to display this as much as it is their right to have large, plastic, flesh colored, fake testicles hanging from the towing ball of their truck. On the other hand... :-/ ... is that really necessary?

Saw a bumper sticker with the confederate flag on it the other day... it read: "heritage, not hate". Unfortunately, that flag has been used both ways.

Necessary would preclude most of the things you support. Gay marriage is not necessary. Casual drug use is not necessary. Vacations are not necessary. Music is not necessary.

It would preclude most of the things I support too. Sport fishing. Nascar. Camping. OT chat forums. Cross border shopping. Large, plastic, flesh colored, fake testicles.

When you limit freedom, everyone eventually loses.

No... when I said "is that really necessary", I do not mean that the government should ban it. I do not think that even the organization (NASCAR) should ban it. I believe anyone can make a non-violent, quiet protest or represent their views without inflicting harm on others and this is very much within our rights as citizens.

I can't even tell you how many stupid T-shirts I see proclaiming someone's ignorant viewpoint or how many misogynist lyrics I've heard in public. But... it's within their rights to let everyone know just how much of a dumbass they are.

However, vacations are necessary... or Valkyrie will totally go Medieval on someone's ass. ;)

The Confederate flag is not the only flag under attack.

Texas Woman Told to Remove 'Offensive' American Flag From Office

Friday, May 29, 2009

Debbie McLucas comes from a patriotic family – her husband and both of her sons served in the U.S. military, and her daughter is currently deployed to Iraq on her second tour of duty as a combat medic.

So when McLucas arrived at work at a Texas hospital last Friday, she was stunned to be told that the Stars and Stripes she had hung in her office in advance of Memorial Day were offensive, and that the flag had been removed.

“I got into work, I was met by my supervisor and told that there had been multiple complaints, that people found the flag very offensive and it had been taken down," McLucas told FOXNews.com.

"I went to the office to retrieve it and found the flag wrapped around the pole, sitting in the corner on the ground. I was speechless."

McLucas, a supervisor at Kindred Hospital in Mansfield, Texas, had displayed the 3-by-5-foot flag in the office she shares with the hospital’s three other supervisors. McLucas said one of her colleagues, a woman who immigrated to the United States from Africa 14 years ago, complained about the flag to upper management, and the hospital decided to take down the flag. (So the bitch hasn't yet assimilated into American culture. Why in the fuck did she come here? --j)

"I was told that as long as my flag offended one person, it would be taken down," McLucas said.

She said the hospital told her that the American flag flying outside the building would have to suffice. "I was told, ‘There is a flag hanging out front, everyone can see that one. Is that not enough?’"

No, she said, that wasn't enough.

"It is more than I can even fathom, that you would find the American flag offensive, in America," McLucas said.

A Kindred Healthcare spokeswoman did not return calls for comment. Kindred issued a press release stating, “Kindred Hospital Mansfield has a great deal of appreciation for the service that many of our employees and their families have given to their country. We honor our veterans and active military through a variety of benefits and service programs. This was an isolated incident between two employees that we are working to resolve amicably.”

The statement went on to explain: “The disagreement was over the size of the flag and not what it symbolized. We have invited the employee to put the flag back up.”

And it will go back up and stay up, McLucas said.

"I do think they're trying to do the right thing. I have no reason to believe the flag won't remain there as long as I'm employed."

My first reaction is... WTF?

The first reason for taking it down is that the flag was found offensive by one supervisor (and immigrant from Africa) and then...
The second "official" reason for taking it down was the size.

If it was falling all over other cubes or desks or blocking equipment then I'd tell her to move it so it wasn't in the way. But I don't get from the article that that's really the case at all.

Again... WTF?

The NAACP keeps racism alive and well.

Black Men say Rebel flag flies for freedom

"I am marching for freedom," Hervey said. "The battle flag stands for freedom and states' rights. The U.S. flag is the flag of slavery. It flew over 100 years of slavery, and Native Americans were annihilated under that flag."

"We currently live under a psychological form of reconstruction," he said. "Whites are made to feel guilty for sins of their ancestors, and blacks are made to feel downtrodden. This keeps all of us from communicating. The political correctness of today is killing the pride of the people."

Then, late Wednesday morning, Kindred posted on its website a statement about the incident. It reads, in part: "The disagreement was over the size of the flag and not what it symbolized. We have invited the employee to put the flag back up."

Public pressure seems to have resolved the situation.
