Southern Discomfort
Students at a university in Scotland have voted to ban the Bible from residence halls because its presence might make non-Christian uncomfortable, according to The Scotsman.

Stirling University Students' Association wants to remove up to 6,000 copies of the Gideon Bible from more than 2,000 dorm rooms.

Citing the Scottish Executive's One Scotland Many Cultures campaign, the students said representing one faith was not in the spirit of equality.

Al Wilson, president of the association, said: "It's promoting one faith over others, so we're trying to encourage the university to still retain the Bibles within the buildings themselves, but not necessarily in the rooms."

**end**

As long as there are tests, there will always be prayer in schools.

My experience is the Christian students bring their own Bibles. Now, how many of them read them instead of using them for beer coasters may be a different discussion...

That's cool, so long as they also ban the Koran, Mien Kampf, Mao's little red book, and any other printed work which contains any opinion or belief that may, God almighty forbid, actually OFFEND someone.

Idiots.

Then ban any science text that espouses Darwinism, Big Bang, or any other belief. Let's go whole hog here or not at all.

I think that what they're saying is the school currently puts bibles in all rooms...and they wanna take them OUT of the rooms but still have them available for anyone who wants to use them...I don't get the impression that the students are banned from bringing their own...If I have read it correctly I see their point...if two jewish people are roommates...why do they need the christian bible in their room?

[Emily Littela]Oh. Well that's different then. Never mind.[/Emily Litella] :lloyd:

um

Luis has picked the wrong word I think. Second language and all.

and Nixy's right. They want to take out what the Gideons have put in. The problem is...?

And I'm surprised it wasn't sooner.

On google searching, it appears that the word ban here is simply bad journalism.

If you don't like it, do what I do. Don't read it. Use it to prop up the short leg on your chair. Removing books from sight because you don't agree with what's in them gives rise to extreme misgivings for me.

Whatever nasty term Luis meant, unless he bothers to explain himself, I'm gonna blow him off.

or do like I do and don't try and cram myths and lies down everybody else's throat at every opportunity.
