Actually, ris, it depends upon the tax. In a nutshell, nobody wants to pay more for something they like, or use, on an on-going basis. Take cigarettes, for example. Most folks don't mind the tax, because it supposedly helps pay for medical costs associated with smoking. Try taxing 'junk food', and see what happens.

i agree gato, no-one like paying tax on something don't like or use. i was using a gross generalisation in identifying that it is conservatives who normally want to pay less tax in general [keep what i earn thingumie], while the gross generalistion for liberals is they like tax and spend a bit more if it helps the disadvantaged [or the coffee drinker, obviously]
