Generic vs. Name Brand

Erik prefers nasty Kroger store brand frozen carboard pizzas. I prefer the name brand frozen carboard pizzas. This strikes me as odd since there are many generic things he won't eat.

What will you NOT eat unless it is the name brand.

I won't eat generic mayo or cola flavored soda.

I'm a creature of habit, therefore I usually stick to the brands I've used since I was a kid. This means most generic stuff is outta the question.

Also, I refuse to buy generic stuff produced especially for certain chains, if those procucts completely replace brand products. If they won't let me choose product, then I choose another store. An example of this is canned fish-balls. (Yes, you heard me..) My local store had to different name brands. One fairly expensive, one wasn't too expensive. Then they started selling a generic type belonging to that store chain, really cheap stuff. What happened? They kept the most expensive brand, and dropped the other one. Bastards. I loved those fish-balls. :mope:

Generic canned food - hell no. Gotta have the name brands.

Other stuff, like household supplies and HBA - the Walmart store brand is actually very good quality, IMO.

The Walmart brand sodas and snack foods taste as good as the name brands - in fact, their diet cola tastes better than Diet Coke to me.

I won't feed the kids generic brand lunch meats. Or tinned meats. I won't buy generic brand canned vegetables. Generic soups blow, as does generic KD. Won't buy those either  None of those things offer much savings anyway. The nickel ain't worth the grody factor.

Everything else is on a generic brand product by product trial and error. I'll try it once, if it doesn't impress, never again. IGA offers "Smart Choice" brand. Don't let them fool you. It is NEVER EVER a smart choice.

generic spam is a touch disturbing.

As opposed to name brand Spam, which is....completely disgusting!

Canned chili. I buy Bush's exclusively now. Not bad for canned meat.

Potato chips. Most store brands are edible, but barely.

Breakfast sausage. When I can't have locally made sausage, I buy Tennessee Pride. In a pinch, Wampler's will do. Nothing else considered.

Coffee. Folger's or Maxwell House preferrably. For whole bean, we buy Eight O'Clock brand. Store brand coffee is just wrong.

CoffeeMate. Vanilla Caramel flavor. Ambrosia it is.

I cannot eat store brand Hamburger Helper. The original ain't no great shakes, but the generic is atrocious.

AE will scalp me if I present any mayo not bearing the Kraft brand. I don't eat mayo usually.

Ketchup. Heinz or nothing.

Taco dinner kits. The store brands are always full of broken shells, they don't warm up right...just a major crisis all around. We use Taco Bell brand.

I will say, however, that for some products we prefer the store brands. Grape or orange sodas, peanut butter, canned biscuits, shredded cheese, sloppy joe sauce, noodles...just depends. This varies from store to store too.

What's "generic"... do you mean "supermarket own brand"...

Cos tinned foods... we get own brand tinned veg and things like curries, chillies, and tinned fish (tuna, mackeral and tomato)... But we only ever get "Heinz" baked beans and soups!

Bread and cakes... store's own (bread thats baked on the premises) plus some brands.. "Mr Kiplings" "Warburtons"

Soda (what I call "Pop" ) has to be "Coca-Cola" or "Diet Coke"... but the lemonade can be stores own...

Frozen fish... Brand and own depending whats on offer... Oven chips we're into McCain HomeFries in a big way at the mo... but my low fat are own brand!

Coffee... instant... brand name... although we do swap brand... depends whats on offer... Tea... always "Yorkshire Tea"

Its a mixture really...

But it may be diffferent over there but most "own brand" foods are actually made by the brand companies... like bakery that makes "Hovis" bread makes the bread products for M&S and Tesco if I remember rightly...

But we never, ever buy value own brand though... basically its not fair... they're designed for the poor and we're not... why take from them?... same as buying up all the half price "out of date" stuff we don't as your literally robbing the real poor!

But you see, over here, those who the government deem as "really poor" get food stamps. They get their food free. It's handed to them with no expectation of work on their part. Hence, they can go get anything they want. This money is provided by the working tax payers, who after supporting the deadbeats and their 17 children, have just enough left in their paychecks to buy the cheap-o stuff. It's called Support Your Vastly Oversized Centralized Government, aka US Democracy.

[SnP raising another Confederate flag in opposition of the above system. See, not a single slave involved. And y'all said it couldn't be true.]

I think you misunderstood me SNP...

The "value own brand" stuff can be bought by anyone... its not a government initiative... those who are intelligent and sensible, on benefits and low income should, and most often, purchase such products.

Basically we don't because as a family we really don't need to buy cornflakes for 80p but other families do... so why deprive them?

There is a "food stamp" situation here for the asylum seakers... they have to spend right up to the last penny... its kind of amusing to watch at the checkout when they're about £2 shy of the whole voucher and they're asked to "Go get something for twoooo pounds... twoooo pounds!" in best "you don't speak English you must be deaf and stupid" voice by the check out assistant... and they come running back with a £10 bottle of vodka, or a £6 joint of meat! "Yes? Yes?" "No TWO POUNDS!... 2 more tins of chilli or summit!"

They're not daft... but then travelling through Italy, Germany, France... "The Hanging Garden's of Babylon" to get here supposedly under persecution, fleeing for their lives... they're not are they? ;)

Its tinned or deli sliced and rather... nasty... if you don't get a quality one... isn't it a Brit thing?

If you like corned beef... what about corned beef and potato homemade pie... corned beef hotpot... corned beef and tomatoe sarnies.... corned beef frittas...

*Drool*

I don't even want to think about the number of WW points in one slice... never mind a serving of hotpot/hash!!!!
