I'm just about to install Linux. Linux Mandrake v. 9.2, to be specific. I'm currently clearing space from my C-drive in order to make a 20-gig partition and convert it to FAT32, so i can install Linux on it. I know some of you use Linux, and i'd like to know if there is anything is should watch out for when installing, like "OOPS, my FAT just got screwed, there goes my Mp3s and Movies". Any reply is welcome.

Oh, and i currently use WXP. Not for long, though. :swing:

Don't waste your time formatting your linux partition. It doesn't use FAT 32 anyway. The installation program will format it for you, just leave it unformatted (it recognizes unformatted space). Other than that, just be careful not to overwrite or format your other partitions and you'll be fine. Note: Linux does not by default recognize NTFS partitions, although that's pretty easy to set up. They'll be read only though.

Hmmm... It's possible to 'de-partition' space in XPee, right? Otherwise i'm fucked.
 
I don't think XP will do it but Partition Magic, among others, will change the partition type/size/etc
 
Fucking ow. I might want to defragment the drive first. I did a fragmentation check and this is what my file structure looks like...

LMAO!!!!! Oh, and re partitioning, I think Gonz is right, but I'm just learning XP and I'm not certain.
 
partition magic is definitely the way to go for resizing ntfs, i've never had it crap out on me.
 
Alright, i just resized my NTFS partition from 77,5 to 55,5 gigs. Only defrag and install left.
Partition magic rules. I had used it before, i just forgot how fucking awesome it was.
Edit: Hmm... Odd. Scandisk killed my mouse drivers. Luckily, i'm used to navigating without a mouse and was able to restore the driver easily. I still think it was wierd.

*pokes cds* They look powerful. Scary powerful. They seem to have an aura of brilliance around them.

EDIT: FUCK! The same aura of brilliance won't let me boot on them! I don't have my A-drive any more, my boot setting is with CD first... Help?!
 
now, it should boot right from the CD. I've never had a problem with that. You don't have a floppy available at all? If you do and you put the cd in under windows, it will let you make a boot floppy (actually it will walk you through it step by step). I'm not sure I understand why it isn't booting from the cd though. Where you downloaded from wasn't there an md5sums utility? this will check the integrity of your discs. I've gotten bad images before.

Maybe windows has overridden the original boot sequence?

That should be set in BIOS. Windows has no effect on that. Did you check your boot order in BIOS? Does it just boot into windows? Does it give you an error?

I've manually set it to boot CDROM first, and no, there is no error. It simply boots into windows.

It's booting from the hard disk then (but you know that). It must be a problem with the cd then. You could try this: set it to boot only from the cdrom (don't forget to change it back). I'll bet it won't find anything to boot from. The first thing I would do is download the md5sums utility and check my disks (it runs in windows). It's a small file and will download in a few seconds. HOpe this helps.
 
You were right, it bitches about "Insert bootable media" or whatever.

Now, where do i get one of them nifty md5sums utilities? I got my images off a BitTorrent site, no md5sums there.
 
Bah, i feel dumb. I can only find the checksums, no programs for extracting the ones from my isos...:retard:
 
I don't think you understood. The checksums ar ea program to test the ISOs. I found this though:
Know that if the donkey or bittorrent finished the download, you are sure that the files are not corrupted, and you don't have to do an md5 checksum to verify.

so maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree. What happens when you put disk one in a windows machine?

The autostart comes up with all the alternatives(Install, boot disk etc..).

Weird. It should boot then, I don't know why it won't. Oh, I found out bittorrent used md5checksum to verify file downloads so there's no point in doing it again.The only other thing that pops to mind is: Is the cdrom drive your booting from the master drive on the secondary controller? Oops, another one: Is it set for DMA? Whether it is or isn't, you might want to try it the other way.
