As the slope turns

My definition has over 5000 years of history. That makes it THE definition.

I think the definition you are referring to is not that old. Look at ancient cultures, many of them had some sort of Harems, even some cultures to this very day allow polygamy.

Monogamy may be rather recent in historical terms but it is the mainstay for our (the USA) entire history. Polygyny is what you're most likely referring to, takes us back to property rights. Hardly a marriage by modern standards.

Still, significantly less than "5000 years." Ah, what the hell. Rewrite the facts to fit your agenda, everyone else does.

*tacks on:

Historically, and pre-historically, varying forms of polgamy/polygyny were likely the norm, rather than the less practiced.

I added one too many zeroes. Sue me.

Marriage, as we, the west, specifically Europe & the Americas, know it, has been practiced, basically as is, since the 13th century. Polygamy is still practiced in many (most?) non-western traditions. Polygamy tends to lend from (primarily) polygyny which is as more property rights than state of wedded bliss. More animal than evolved human social trait.

Marriage is one of the basic foundations of social traits, sending us up the ladder to civilization. It creates a bond & allows for the species to move past sperm spreading &/or safety structure to more advanced pass times, like creating nukes.

Back and fill, Gonz. Back and fill.

It never ceases to amuse me how so many people believe that what they think is right is no more or less than the "natural order of things."

There'd be no need if a generalized statement didn't get some people so disputatious

An awful lot of Mormons might disagree. :D

Just curious if you knew the Israeli kibbutz model was communism?
