A fundraiser for presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama has been set for Aug. 12 at the Kahala Hotel & Resort.

Chuck Freedman, spokesman for the Obama campaign in Hawaii, confirmed the fundraiser but could not confirm the Illinois senator's presence at the fundraiser.

"We are still waiting for the national campaign to announce any specifics of Sen. Obama coming here," he said. "We have not been officially advised that he is coming here yet."

Honolulu-born Obama is expected to visit Honolulu in mid-August for a short vacation before the Democratic National Convention in Denver, which starts Aug. 25.

Obama, who spent much of his childhood here but has not been to Honolulu since December 2006, has a sister and grandmother living on Oahu.

Mayor Mufi Hannemann and local financier Walter Dods are co-chairmen of the event, sources have said.

Freedman said invitations to the private fundraiser are being sent out. Tickets are $2,300. There is also a $10,000-per-person private reception before the fundraiser.

Is this a normal price for a presidential fundraiser? Holyfreakincow! Talk about being in touch with the people!

Wow! Obama is the only presidential candidate to ever make his way here, so I never paid attention to how much one of those fundraisers cost before this!

That's craziness!
