Russia.. even more now than they ever were. The threat isnt as a nation; it is by individuals. You can't have a superpower step down from the podium of world power and descend into chaos without problems. They produced 100,000 scientists and technicians capable of teaching others how to find, refine, and build nasty weapons of chemical, nuclear, and biological natures. They used to be fed by the state and kept in relative comfort. That is now gone. They either have to market out their skills like everyone else or starve. Those with a permeable moral fiber and a certain desire for fast cars and expensive watches would gladly work for the renegade nations of the world in bringing them up to speed on how to wage modern war as they are offering top dollar. It should be fairly easy for Iran and North Korea to toss around a few million dollars and bypass a few billion dollars and several decades of original research.

I should've added Iran to the poll...oh well.

It wouldn't be the first time that Russian nationals and former USSR nation states have caused troubles. Just a quick look at Afghanistan, Chechnia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhistan etc etc. for an idea as to how the breakup changed the powerbase.

RE: the Russian scientists and phycisists finding new 'jobs' , what interests me more is where they're selling their knowledge that disturbs me more than the fact that they are selling it.

I'd have to say China ranks up there, considering their state-sponsored attempt to buy Unocal and other little things like that. I think they rate a close second to Mr. Bishop's posts. :D

D'ya think that they're trying to financially cripple other countries through their purchases or something else entirely?

You're too kind. Tomorrow we take over the world!

Your posts man. I fear them since they threaten me :p

I voted Israel, Palestine, and US. I would have added UN, and Al qaeda. Hamas should be on there as well, as should some other options. You yourself my friend made mention of the ETA

I would like to quote a comment made by a contributor named "Sharon" on our local newpaper's poll and comment site:

Sharon said:
Douglas MacArthur said the first rule of warfare is to know our enemy. That hasn't happened in our nation yet, due to political correctness. Our real enemy is a militant belief system shrouded as a religious faith called Islam. Very shrewd, huh?

Difference is tho, unlike other world religions, Islam doesn't inspire people to be their best for the good of mankind....it inspires people to savagery, murder and suicide as its highest aim. In fact salvation for self and loved ones is only guaranteed to those to sacrifice themselves for jihad. Naive Americans believe liars who say jihad means 'personal struggle'. NOT according to the Quran! It means war until the earth is dominated by Islam. Islam does not mean peace as even our Prez has said, it means 'submission'.

If we are ever going to truly know our enemy, we'd better know how he thinks and read his rulebook! i.e. the Quran. Then study the life of Mohammad its founder. You'll be astonished, and perhaps the fear of the Lord might fall on you as well. Fear that if we don't wise up and He doesn't save us from our own ignorance, we will all die at the hands of a sword. Or bomb.

Yes...we all know a really nice Muslim American, and they do exist...but their Muslim peers call them 'Americanized' said with disdain. And many are great liars. Did I mention they lie? I've lived with them.

Maybe she has a valid point there.

Nah... ETA's not even in the same league as the remaining listed and they don't have the international reach nor the desire to become a threat to world peace. SAme reason why I wouldn't list the IRA or PIRA.

No army, no missiles, no nukes. Strictly internal strife.

Well, they might have used Unocal oil to fuel the planes and ships on their way to Taiwan to test us and see if we'll really defend Taiwan. Or, say for example a Taliban-style regime takes over in Saudi Arabia and declares all oil from there off-limits to the industrialized nations. Then suddenly China declarea that all Unocal production will be re-routed to take care of China's consumption. That's not a good situation to contemplate.

Oh, and Clinton trying to give them the Long Beach Naval Shipyard... them hacking into the computers of the US Government and corporations with technologies the Chinese want... you know, little stuff like that.

I don't trust Putin as far as I can throw him, but I think China's more of a threat to us right now.

Or maybe she uses sources of information besides news outlets. You remember those, doncha? Books and stuff, where what is written is there forever, nonretractible, nondebatable, and not open to interpretation by any kookball with a teleprompter?

ahem

So...she's an Imam now? Studied the Qu'ran in depth, read it several times and is qualified to guage what the true meaning of Jihad is? I'm guessing that she's basing her information on news outlets and web-sites that have done their own slanted interpretations aimed specifically at attacking a religion and equivalating it to being a terrorist by birth.

Both the Qu'ran and the Bible (and many other books for that matter) are open to interpretation by any kookball with a teleprompter. They're also both open to any kookball with access to the web...which this woman strikes me as being.

An old English teacher of mine once refered to this as "Verbal Diarrhea" - You take solid information, churn it up and dish out inconsistant chunks of shit barely recognizeable as the original.

Interesting viewpoint. I was thinking that they're trying to buy Unocal for the tech so that they can bring up their own oil...the last bit about China diverting Unocal's oil. I don't think that the GVT would allow China to cripple American oil intake...contract or no contract. If China suddenly attacked Taiwan and the USA defended... the war would give the GVT the opportunity to just cancel the contract outright and keep it's reserves. You don't do business trades with the enemy in the midst of a war.

If Saudi Arabia tried to limit who they sold oil to...they'd be crippling themselves financially, and opening themselves up to invasion. I don't think they're that stupid.

I agree that China is the #1 threat right now... but more because of expansionism. Plenty of oil in Russia and Russia's kinda weak in their military right now. Mind you, Russia's got nukes...hmmm scratch that. Afghanistan's got oil

China....of course the voting was limited by the question using the term world peace. Palestine & Syria are localized threats. Russia isn't what she used to be.

Iraq shot at American (read: coalition) Warplanes on a daily basis. Iraq financed terrorism. Both acts of war.

Syria could be considered a world threat. Palestine doesn't have the outreach.
