the sad tale of ash's image stuff.

once upon a time, there was a chick named ash. she liked computers, and she liked making pretty piccytures with her image stuff. she also enjoyed scanning drawings and photos she'd done in real life.
then, one day, she went to go make a picture on her computer.
when she tried to save it, the window closed suddenly, and lost her picture. she was very upset. she tried it again, to see if that was just a little error, or if it'd do it again.
it did.
and again.
and again.
she gave up.
then, shortly after, she attempted to scan something.
same story. when trying to save, all the involved windows promptly closed themselves.
she was mad.
and then, she tried to attatch an image file to an email. it, too, didnt work.
attatching files to message board posts also didnt work.
nor did uploading userpics or avatars to journalsites or message boards.
nor did uploading files to her website, at www.angelfire.com/wizard/alice0 .
opening img files on her comp also didnt work.
why, in fact, just being in the same folder as an image file made the window close. this made it difficult to get to many other files, unless she went directly to the non-image program (notepad, word, etc) they were made in, and opened them from there. this was inconvieniencing.

then, one day, she realised there was a shortcut-thingy on her desktop, which was called "Photoshp". she thought the lack of the last "O" was odd. she uninstalled it.
suddenly, her image stuff worked again!
however, this was short-lived. it only lasted half a week.
she tried to see if "Photoshp" was on her desktop again, for her to uninstall again.
alas.
she cried.

the end.

so......... what do you all suggest?

You say it's XP?

Copy all the stuff in My documents to the Root of C:, Delete your account, create yourself a new account, copy everything back to my documents.

Step 2, quit opening attachments in emails unless you are damn sure you know what they are.

Extending on that last step, don't even open an email from someone you don't know, unless you're using a web-based email service or any email program not made by microsoft.

You never know what some viruses can be disguised as, and many of them can be activated without even viewing attachments in them.

Ash, darlin, this says it all.

then, one day, she realised there was a shortcut-thingy on her desktop, which was called "Photoshp". she thought the lack of the last "O" was odd. she uninstalled it.

How did you uninstall it? From the control panel, Add/Remove Programs? Or did you just delete the icon on the desktop? Did it say Photoshp in the Control Panel? There's about a 90% chance that was a virus, or still is a virus in your computer. If your brother uses the computer too, and it hasn't affected him, chances are it's contained to your profile for now, but I would really suggest getting a good antivirus program and scanning the entire computer. Then copy the files you want to save to the Root of C:, delete your profile and create yourself a new one.

Just looking some more, I can't find any info on that as a virus, but the behavior you are getting really sounds virus like, how long has this been going on?

it's been going on for a long while, maybe about six months?
i don't really open attatchments unless my friends send them to me, and i know what it is. i even email or message them back to ask what it is, sometimes. and my friends don't often email me. no one does, lol. most of them are junk and just get deleted. i use hotmail, and i have an email adress that's @jjr512.com. i don't use outlook or any such program; i access them from the web.
i hope justin comes over soon, i'll show him this thread and have him help me do the copy-the-stuff-and-delete-the-account-and-create-a-new-one thing, i'll probably mess it up if i try.
as for how i uninstalled the faulty thingy on my desktop, i believe i right clicked on it, and did uninstall from there. it went thru the add/remove programs thingy. i think that's how i did it.
altho, it's worth mentioning, that i searched my comp for "photoshp", and it came up with a list of stuff that had that in its filename. i was thinking of uninstalling each thingy. would that work?
i find it really puzzling, that it all worked for a few days and then, suddenly... stopped. :(

Viruses can be like that though, if you don't clean them up completely, they have ways of recreating themselves. Are you running anti-virus software on the machine?

You should have either a Green Diamond or a little yellow computer in your taskbar by the clock that is Norton, right click on that and I think one of the options is System Scan, do that and see what happens. If you have Nortons running all the time, it should have caught it when it came through, but odd things can happen too.

there's a little icon, with a monitor that has a little yellow screen, and this really small red plus-sign thing in a rectangle.
mousing it over, it reads:
Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect Enabled.
i don't mess with it ever...
so it's a good thing that it's there like that, i take it?

Ash,
do you run commit cursor, real player, kazza, mIrc, or anything
funky like that?

also do a search for taskmngr.exe ;)

kazaa, that's common, tho... stupid spyware thingy stuff... i didnt know it could mess with things so bad.
(i used to have comet cursor, and realplayer, but i switched systems so those're gone for good ^_^)

i think i've heard of taskmngr.exe. isnt it not real, cos its got the "n" in it? altho puzzled by the wink-face ,i'm searching for it still. :-/

taskmngr.exe couldnt be found, which i take it is a good thing?

however, my norton icon "down by the time", as i often say... has disappeared? :confuse3:

no taskmngr, good.;)
Kazza, bad, very bad.:(
You might want to backup, then do a fresh install.

A friend of mine had the same problem trying to run Kazza,
and norton av. It also messed something up so that his
all in one printer, fax, scanner, copyer thing wouldn't work,
and a whole bunch of other freaky stuff.

Good alternative to Norton and McAffee- AVG 6.0 Antivirus (Free for home users) @ www.grisoft.com/ - I've intercepted a few viruses with it. and I have not yet come across a program with which it interferes. :)

Remove Kazaa.

Go to www.kazaalite.com and install newest version and upgrade(read readme files for instructions) - result - no nasty spyware or adware.

Also go to www.lavasoft.nu/index.html and download ad-aware to get rid of nasty adware on your comp. Please note that if you still have Kazaa on your comp and remove the adware it will not run, so replace it first. And always backup files before removing them as some programs will not run without them and you find you have to restore them.

That said I haven't yet found it necessary with anything except Kazza.

i tried to get kazaa lite, once. but when i tried to uninstall kazaa, which was very difficult... not all parts were uninstalled (or something), so kazaa lite didnt install properly, and there were still ads and shit.

Unfortunately unwanted files are often left behind after uninstalling a program especially by the add/remove utility on control panel.

Ad-aware is free and will get rid of the ads once you have uninstalled Kazaa. You also need to run a cleanup program such as CleanSweep or Ashampoo WinOptimizer to get rid of any other files left behind after uninstalling the program, you may well be shocked by the amount of junk found if you have never run one of these before. Sadly these programs cost but Ashampoo in particular gives full access to the program during the 30 day trial. Both can be run at beginner level, which is quite safe. I don't suggest any of the other free programs as they require more knowledge than you appear to have at this time to run them.

I would also suggest you do NOT uninstall any .DLL files unless you know exactly what you're doing! And always take the option to backup the files before deleting them, so they can be restored if you find anything has stopped working.
