in almost every major race. makes me wonder what the dems were thinking when they voted. I dont mean it in a bad way im really wondering how many switched sides.

And why wont kerry concede? reminds me of a little kid being stubborn, he knows he lost but wont admit to it.

I don't know why Kerry is doing that...seems to me it'd just repel those who voted for them and maybe make them reconsider should there be a next time.

Haven't caught the news... (work and all  American news websites are restricted.. why? No idea!) is Kerry contesting the result?

Em... it is a democratic voting proccess isn't it? Is the count not final?

Q&A: What's going on?

The White House has claimed victory for George W Bush in the US presidential election. However, John Kerry has not conceded. Mr Kerry needs to win Ohio to stay in the race.

Q: Why does the White House believe Mr Bush has won re-election?

Because they say he will win Ohio, which will give him 20 votes in the Electoral College that decides the election. Without those 20 votes, John Kerry has no hope of winning.

Q: Why is the result in Ohio delayed?

Because of the uncounted so-called provisional votes. At the moment, Mr Bush is ahead in the counted vote by about 145,000. According to the Ohio election officials there are estimated to be about 190,000 provisional votes but Democrats say it could higher. The deadline for these votes to be checked and counted is 15 November.

Provisional voting is allowed if a voter is not on the register. The vote is then held for checking before the count is made. In the past in Ohio about 10% of such votes have been rejected.

Q: Will Mr Kerry concede if he thinks he will lose Ohio?

Yes. If he accepts that he has no realistic chance of winning enough provisional votes to overcome Mr Bush's lead in the regular votes, he will have to. But he might want to wait until the issue is crystal clear.

Q: When will we know the result?

It could come quickly if Mr Kerry concedes. If not, it could take until the Ohio provisional votes are counted.

Q: Is this a re-run of Florida in 2000?

It is as close as in 2000 but in a different way. In Florida there were disputes about the votes (the "hanging chads" etc). This time, so far at least, it is not about the legality of the votes but about waiting until the count is done.

Q: Who has won the popular vote this time?

President Bush will win the popular vote, unlike last time. He is ahead by 51% to 48% with 1% for the outsider Ralph Nader. If he wins both the popular vote and the Electoral College vote, Mr Bush will have laid to rest some of the ghosts from 2000.

Q: What happened in Florida this time?

Mr Bush is the comfortable projected winner by 52% to 47%. So there is no repeat of the Florida fiasco of 2000. A win in Florida puts Mr Bush into a strong position to win the presidency. Q: What happened in the Senate and House of Representatives? The Republicans did well and are set to increase their control over both Houses of Congress. The leader of the Democrats in the Senate Tom Daschle was defeated.

All the votes have not been counted yet Claire. I think Bush will win anyway, but why don't we wait and see? And no, it's not exactly a democratic process. Most Americans don't understand that, so I wouldn't expect anyone else to. :D

chcr, while i agree that all havent been counted, Even the state attorney of ohio says he needs 93% of the leftover votes to win. assuming that all 250k of them are good. I just hope we dont have to pay for another politicians hopes.

Ooooooh! So this is the same as last time... News channels and spokes people "claiming victory" when the votes are still to be counted... I can't believe that in the last election they ran with what the news had predicted instead of the actual vote...

You could really see that happening here...

"As John Snow on Ch4 with his swingometer has said the Tories will gain power... so to save face we're gonna run with that!"

If it was the BBC... maybe! :p :p :D

Bush in FLorida in 2000. If Bush can do it over 1000 votes without the popular vote, why is everyone hammering on Kerry for doing the same thing over 3 states and an approx. 250million votes?

Last I heard, they have about 175,000 provisional ballots uncounted, and Bush has a 135,000 vote lead. With those numbers, it's basically over, but I understand the Kerry viewpoint. You don't easily cede something you've got a year invested in without everything being totally done. With luck, he'll have enough honor to keep it out of the courts.

1) Kerry hasn't yet.

2) A 135,000 lead is less questionable than a 1,000 vote lead.

Sorry, I wasn't disagreeing, just pointing out. I agree that Bush will win, let's just go ahead and count 'em to be sure.

Marhematics has its place.

I'm not sure what's more exciting...Bush winning or Tom Daschle losing :jump:

The strangest part of that whole debacle? Ohio has 27 electoral votes. If Kerry would've won Ohio, then he and President Bush would be deadlocked at 269. If that had happened, then the House of Representatives would do the voting...question...who has majority in the House? ;)
