Hurrican Charlie.........

Kinda reminds me of home alittle (NJ)...Getting ready for a notheastern snow storm...the shopping , the prepping, the making plans for emergencies.....but in the end, all is fine and dandy, hope so here. Never been down south and had to deal with bad winds and rain, so coming from not being experienced, Im hoping its not as bad as what all here are making it to be. The stores have no bread here, no milk, no WATER......work at a golf club and had to unplug everything, put all food in one frig., bring in all the patio furniture and tables, etc....and they are closing the course for 2 days...Hmmmmmm...guess i'll reply to this thread in 2-3 days and let you all know what happened...

Mare, I didn't see this thread before I posted that note to you in the Shoutbox. :lloyd:

Charley could turn out to be a very powerful storm by the time it reaches you. Be prepared for the power to be out for a while at the very least. And hoard every gallon of water you can. If no bottled water is available, fill every container you can find with drinking water, and fill a bathtub with water for washing.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for ya, maybe Charley will break up as it crosses Cuba, or if it doesn't, hopefully it will bear off to the south and go into the Everglades.

Please dont scare me like this Sharky!!!!!! There is absolutely NO bottled water left in the grocery stores near us. I have drinking bottled water and got some gallons. My sis said fill the tub too, and she got her propane tank filled. Wanted us to come stay with her, she is only around the corner but was saying it could be bad. We are already kinda flooded from all the rain we been having. Im off from work today-so will venture out for more water. I hate that everything here is electric (the stove).Miss gas stove like in jersey. Oh well, good must come with bad-just prep more and hope for the best.

Oh, one more thing, Got any ideas for foods that don't need to be cooked??? Anybody???

Good luck all!!!

Canned food is your best bet, including meats, fish, fruits and veggies.

Canned fruit and veggies in water also give you something for hydration, dont just toss the liquids. (canned pears and other sweetend syrups can make a sweet drink with water)

You can fill garbage bags with water also, just keep the sinched end up.

In a pinch, the water in the back-tank of your toilet is potable too (so dont flush it)

Small jars of mayonaise are heat tolerant but the become disposable once you open them good for one of my persoanl fav's Tunafish sammies., any little pakaged mayoniase and any other pakages condiment can come in quite handy.

Using foil and freely scattered building materials you can make a parabolic solor array to heat up food too.

Be sure to have plenty of matches and a good knife availble, you can do anything from there.

Ah Ha, thanks RM, forgot about the condiment packets, thats a good one...I know I thought of PBJ's, remembered tuna, but hated it without mayo-packets are good thing. Been watching the news and YEP-its a coming with force, they are already having a meeting today to make it manditory for Boca Grande to be evacuated, thats a hop, skip from us...I'm Charlotte County and the next county is Sarasota, they are trying to evacuate there too. I remember Hugo in NJ in the 80's. Just scary down here, water is surrounding us everywhere. Thanks again for the packet ideas.... :winkkiss:

Just a suggestion. If you can, freeze a solid block of water, to help try and keep what food you have from spoiling. And keep the fridge door closed as much as possible. I've a big chest freezer and try to keep at least a couple of loaf pans full of ice, just in case.

if you can find plywood i would suggest boarding your windows vice taping them...the tape is a bitch to remove and if the storm hits hard the only good it does is to keep the glass taped together as it hits the floor

We are talking about 21st Century here right? A hurricane in 2004 not a population ending gaseous attack by some not very benevolent alien species (the French mebbe), right? Two or three days worth of necessities...ya'll are stocking her up for armageddon (or the big one in Cali)

Actually, since there are two storms, one right on the other's tail, I'd wager that it's gonna take more than two day for them to get their shit back together.

and the thing is is that if the first one is of any power it will weaken tree limbs, trees themselves, your roof, old buildings....then when the second one hits all hell breaks loose.

That may be true but unlike earthquakes, the underground infrastructure stays intact during a himmicane (Charlie is the problem right). Most city residents have power returned in less than 24 hours. If one lives in the boonies they are better prepared anyway.

Granted, these are all good suggestions & should be followed in daily life in case of any disaster.

Sharky, this isn't yours is it?

This is one of those extremely rare times I'm glad I don't live on the beach. All we're gonna get is flooding.

Hold onto your hats, down there.

People who live in town do that here if the local weather says there's a chance of snow.

Wait a sec. If the power goes out then the internet goes out too. That's it, you guys just have to move, there's really no choice about it.

my granny just got evaced within the last 30 minutes. moving her 20 miles in. she is in the bradento/sarasota area. hope Q is safe.....
