Going to be gone for a bit

I'm going on yet another hiatus for the short term... at least this time it is because the HD on my main machine died. Picking up the pieces will take time.

...just so none of ya start wondering if I've fallen off a cliff or not.

Awww. I don't know if I can make it a day at OTC without you, Unc. :(

* Rose walks away crying and babbling about missing Unc terribly

My backup machine here in the basement unfortunately is only running on like 4meg of onboard video ... so everything looks like ass. Its all too hard on the eyes to try and park here ... no tv, no tunes, no tea, no chair, dim light. I wont last long on this machine. Someone send me a PM. I'm configuring this machine to intercept emails. I want to see if it took.

It was a 17 gig SCSSI drive, too. The darn things are supposed to last forever... but I barely got 2 years. So much for paying top dollar for quality. Next time... lots of memory, IDE, no namer. Its all the same to me in the end.

Take care, and sort your puter problems soon. :)

btw, what brand was the hdd?

Ooooh. :( Bummer. Seagate's usually pretty good, no?

No, the quality of their drives is not good, except for the older products (hdds of less than 200MB)

nah. Seeing as its for my main machine, I need to get a decent modern large drive. I'm thinking 80,100,120 gig. I can get 4 on it without a raid card. Lets see ... 4 + 4 more raided+ external HDs... hmm... I should end up with 1600gig to play with.

Yeah, RAID is a good way to get rid of bugs. :D

why would you want to get a 120mb hdd?? j/k ;) :D

Personally, I kinda dislike samsung but not as much as i dislike seagate. Pros: solid build and are cheap, cons: somewhat noisy and slow.

Noisy is no matter since the setup I am using is already quite loud with several fans. Slow is not much of an issue since I am already coming down from a scsi drive. That would make everything seem slow by comparison.

doh! 120gig ...sorry. ;) Don't want to sound dated. :)

Another brand you might want to look after is Fujitsu, I've never seen a dead one, as cheap as samsung and are extremely quiet. I hope their quality still holds to that.

AFAIK, fujitsu built the most silent drives years ago, and many companies copied their noise reduction system.

I was looking at the Fujitsus ... but all were ATA. I needed IDE. I think I need to play into the longshot side of the curve and buy crap from now on... after all, buying quality has never paid off. I've been leftr with early death every time.

ATA equals IDE equals EIDE.

SATA drives are the ones you can't use with regular IDE interfaces.
