Could also be a corrupted MBR. I've had that problem before. If that's the case, rescuing data is harder if you don't have a backup of the mbr. Especially if the disk was heavily fragmented.

My brother got himself one of those HP mini's. He loves it, mostly. His intention was to use it for games too, but the screen size limitation leaves him up the creek sometimes. If you're only going to use it for basic web stuff, that might be a viable option. It's cheap, too. Like $200 or something?
