View Full Version : Curso de español

Based on your votes i decided to make the thread

Palabras del dia:
see = ver
look = mirar
to observe = observar

The order of the conjugations will always be the same: i, you,he/she,we,plural you and they

Present:
veo,ves,ve,vemos,ven,ven
miro,miras,mira,miramos,miran,miran
observo,observas,observa,observamos,observan,obser van

On latin spanish, there's no vosotros nor vos, which replace you and plural you in Spain's spanish.

Notice how the conjugation of plural you and they is the same, and as far as i can tell right now, is the same for all verbs.

There's one "weird" letter in spanish:

ñ = alt 164
Ñ = alt 165

Leslie
5/22/02, 11:40am
:headbang:

Curso what is the definition of that? Are we cursing spanish in this thread? :laugh:

What are

I
you
we
you
they

in espanol? I can't figure how to get the tilde.

Luis G
5/22/02, 11:47am
I = yo
you = tú (with that little line over the u)
he/she = él / ella
we = nosotros/nosotras (masculine/feminine)
plural you = ustedes
they = ellos/ellas (m/f)

All neutral are considered masculine.

Curso = a study course

Luis G
5/22/02, 11:48am
á = 160
é = 130
í = 161
ó = 162
ú = 163

Leslie
5/22/02, 12:00pm
yo curso espanol?

still can't figure the tilde :confuse3:

Luis G
5/22/02, 02:12pm
ALT + 160 should put á, and so on....

to write the ñ use alt+165

Wow, you said it the right way.

to take or to follow a course of study = cursar

¿yo curso español? (a question in spanish need an initial ¿ )
sí, tú cursas español :D :D

Leslie
5/22/02, 02:19pm
:D

If I can do french I can do spanish. So there is no neutral, just feminine or masculine?

Maybe I don't have it or I'm doing it wrong. :confuse3:

Luis G
5/22/02, 02:22pm
Maybe is the code page you're using, i can't write the euro symbol on my computer :confuse3:

Can you do the accents with the ascii codes i wrote?? (á é í ó ú)

friend = Amigo/a (m/f)
water = agua
desktop = escritorio
sky = cielo

Here are the previous words of the day:

Palabras del dia:[/]
see = ver
look = mirar
observe = observar

Palabras del dia:[/]
computer = computadora
speed = velocidad

Palabras del dia:[/]
water = agua
beer = cerveza

Words of th day.
word = palabra
of = de
the = el/la (i must remind you that sustantives are male/female too)
day = día (with that little line above the i)
the complete sentence would be: palabra de el día, but "de el" is incorrect and should be replaced for del: palabra del día

Leslie
5/22/02, 03:08pm
I need the conjugations of "to be","to have"and the possessive "my"

yo veo agua
¿tú observas el computerdora?
Mi día es May 23 :D

Luis G
5/22/02, 03:13pm
my = mi
your = tu (without the accent)
his/her = su
our = nuestro
their = su

Here comes something extra....possesive referring to more than one thing:

my cars = mis carros
your cars = tus carros
his/her cars = sus carros
our cars = nuestros carros
their cars = sus carros

Birthday = cumpleaños

psst, computadora is feminine, la computadora[/siz]

Luis G
5/22/02, 03:19pm
to be and to have are a completely confussion....

Only present conjugations.

to be = ser
i am = yo soy
you are = tú eres
he/she is = él/ella es
we are = nosotros somos
"plural you" are = ustedes son
they are = ellos son

to have = haber
i have = yo he
you have = tú has
he/she have = él/ella ha
we have = nosotros hemos
"plural you" have = ustedes han
they have = ellos han

to have is tricky for me, please correct me if i use it wrong. (have, has, had are tricky and i get confused)

Leslie
5/22/02, 03:43pm
:eek2:
I'm going to have to print that out :eek:

¿Ellos han carros?
Tu has computerdora.
Luis es mi amigo.
Mi cumpleaños es May 23.
¿Tu cumpleaños es...?
Ustedes han cerveza.
Yo soy tu amigo.
Ellos son observan carros. (they are watching?)
or Ellos son observar carros.

So that means i wrote it properly in english, for a moment i thought that it should be he/she has ?(

Hrmmm, i think i misundersood "to have", the verb haber does not indicate possesion, it is used like in "i've been there"

present, verb have (possesion)
have = tener
i have = yo tengo
you have = tú tienes
he/she has = él/ella tiene
we have = nosotros tenemos
"plural you" have = ustedes tienen
they have = ellos tienen

I will appreciate if someone points me my english mistakes. ;)

Leslie

you're right

I have
you have
he/she has
you (pl) have

You know, that's a very complex verb...because it implicates two persons....
"person" like "it" or "this" or "that"
i like = me gusta
you like = te gusta
he/she likes = le gusta (no feminine)
we like = nos gusta
pyou like = les gusta
they like = les gusta

I said that to avoid confussions. :D

Water (agua) is feminine, but you must use the masculine "el" to avoid cacophony. And say "el agua" instead of "la agua".

Well we say "a água". What's wrong with that?

Luis G
6/16/02, 12:57pm
Probably it doesn't produce cacophony in portuguese. The most clear example in english would be "the end", "the evening", etc.

Spanish rules are a little different.

Luis G
6/16/02, 01:04pm
el agua (water), el azucar(sugar), el atardecer (when the sun goes down in the afternoon, ???), el animal, el amor (love).

La ambición (ambition), la arquitectura (architecture), la apariencia (appearance).

is a colloquialism (and very old, probly more than 100 years old), "un pajaro en mano es mejor que un ciento volando"

which means, "a bird in your hand is better than a hundred flying", it is meant to indicate that it is better to be certain to have one thing than a hundred possibilities to have other stuff.

There's one "weird" letter in spanish:

ñ = alt 164
Ñ = alt 165

On my keyboard English (British) - English (US) is different

alt 164 = € and 165 does nothing.

I have added Spanish (traditional) to my keyboard in Control Panel(CP).

So far I have found:

; = ñ
# = ç
shift + = = ¿
shift + - = ?
= = ¡
! is in it's usual place

I'm still looking for the accented vowels. Castillian - which I'm learning still uses these accents.

All the symbols they have replaced have moved to other keys but you'll have to find those for yourself or I'll be here for hours.

You can switch between languages by enabling left shift + alt(default) or ctrl + shift (easier for me) in control panel. Plus an icon in sytray to remind you which language is enabled.

Gracias. That works on the British keyboard as well so long as Spanish is selected. Now perhaps I will remember where to put them because I´m always forgetting. :)

PS: I've just discovered that Word supports a Spanish spelling and Grammer checker. Of course it never occured to me before but quite logically it should. While using the Spanish keyboard and happily typing away it asked if I wanted to install that feature - so no more spelling mistakes in my homework. Brilliant! :D :D :D

el transeúnte - passerby
madrugar - ?

Aunty Em
12/03/02, 06:05am
asemejarse - to resemble

embozar - to muzzle
madrugar - to get up early
atravezar - to cross or to go through
risueño - laughing/smiling(always)
renegar - to deny

Verbs with 'se' (e.g. budarse) on the end are reflexsive verbs and mean to do something to oneself and are preceded by the personal pronoun e.g. me levanto a las siete(I get up at 7 - literally - I get myself up at 7). Drop the 'se' and look for the infinitive, or try conjugating the verb e.g. me budo (budarse) or you could try putting the whole sentence into an online translator e.g.

http://www.freetranslation.com/ - you may have more luck.

I'm trying to find an online dictionary because I need it too for my homework. :)

Found this one: http://www.spanishdict.com/

Luis G
12/03/02, 10:42pm
la fisonomía - physonomy??
asmejarse - i assume this is "asemejarse" which is "to be like"
el transeúnte - a walker
madrugar - to get up early in the morning
solazarse - to have a distraction
embozar - to cover the low part of your face
atravezar - to get through
budarse - wtf??, maybe it is "burlarse" which means "to laugh at"
renegar - to deny again
risueño - to have that kind of "smile" in your face
suizo - swiss
lo inútil - the unusable, the pointless, the non-workable
ser capaz de - be capable of

To be honest, i didn't know the meaning of solazarse and embozar and i have never ever heard that words before.
