View Full Version : I quit smoking today...
I have been considering it for a good while, and finally decided yesterday to quit this morning.
2 hours and countng... :frown2:
I would like to take this opportunity to apologize in advance for any potential crankiness which might ensue, as I already have done for my family and friends. :)

Good for you Leslie!! :headbang: Are you using any of that nicorette gum or patches? I quit cold turkey and even though every once in a while I still want one, it does get easier over time. This is some information I had when I quit, and it was good to mark my improvement over time. The things that I noticed (less coughing, sense of smell coming back, etc.) helped me to stay quit.
Changes Your Body Goes Through When You Quit Smoking
Within 20 minutes of last cigarette:
-Blood pressure and pulse rate begin to return to normal
-Circulation to hands and feet improves
-Fibers in the bronchial tubes (cilia) begin to move again, removing irritants and bacteria from the lungs.
8 hours:
-Carbon monoxide level in the blood drops to normal
-Oxygen level in the blood increases to normal.
24 hours:
-Risk for heart attack decreases.
48 hours:
-Nerve endings begin to regrow
72 hours:
-Bronchial tubes relax, making breathing easier
-Lung capacity starts increasing.
2 weeks to 2 months:
-Circulation improves
-Walking becomes easier
-Lung functions increase up to 30%
1 to 9 months:
-Coughing, sinus congestion, fatigue and shortness of breath decrease
-Cilia regrow in the lungs, increasing the ability to handle mucus, clean lungs, and reduce infection
-Body's overall energy level increases.
3 to 5 years:
-Risk of dying of a heart attack decreases to that of a nonsmoker.
10 years:
-Risk of dying of lung cancer decreases to that of a nonsmoker
-Precancerous cells are replaced with healthy cells
-Other cancer occurrences, such as those of the mouth, larynx, esophagus, bladder, kidney and pancreas, decrease. (There are at least 30 chemicals in tobacco smoke that cause cancer.)

Thanks greenfreak, that's great, it's exactly what I've been telling myself, I can't wait to see what things really taste like again, can't wait to actually feel like I'm getting a lungful of air. I am excited about that.
I just gotta get through this first :errrr:

Good luck Leslie! :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:
one piece of advice - find something to do with your hands, knitting or somehting.
4 hours. I've got a needle point kit here I'll be pulling out shortly, and going out to buy gum, crackers and will be making lots and lot of popcorn :D
gotta stop thinking about it...gotta stop thinking about it...gotta stop thinking about it...gotta stop thinking about it...gotta stop thinking about it... :errrr:
Good luck! You made the right decision not only for you but for your family. Years from now you will be looking back thinking it is one of the best things you ever did.
I quit drinking a few years ago and feel 100% better than I did back then.
Once you have the desire to quit, you can do it. People are often amazed by what they can do if they put their minds to doing something. You can do it!
All i can say is good luck, i would not like to sound like i'm not believing you, but i would like to see you bringing up this thread in a year, and say that haven't smoked a single cigarrete.
I hope so too, Luis, and in ten years too :)
Thanks for the pep talk, s4, I needed that then. Feeling better about things now, almost 7 since I last smoked and things are so far, so good :hadbang:
I was a heavy smoker, just before i quit, i was smoking 3 packs (60 cigarretes) per day.
Now it's been more than 2 years since i quit, i have never smoked in that time, but occasionally i still feel that i should smoke just a single cigarrete thinking that it will do no harm, before i quit i tried to quit several times and i always got back to smoke because i always thought that and i was convinced that i will stop whenever i want to, i was wrong. The only way to quit, is to just quit and forget about putting a cigarrete in your mouth...
blah....blah....blah :)
BTW, the first day is hard....
The first week is awful.....
The first month is even worse.....
But after six months or a year you're almost cured
3 packs??!! I thought my to 1 was bad! :ek:
Cold turkey, and never a cigarette again is the only way I'll be able to do it I think. Today I am a non-smoker. If I have one, it'll set me back where I started, so no more for me. :)
48 hours & the nicotine is no longer a problem. Last that long & you've almost made it. Everytime I quit the nicotine isn't the problem, it's the habit of 28 years of hand to mouth. Leslie, remember all the money you'll save in taxes alone. And paying US states for suing big tobacco.
good luck

A few words of caution--the next few weeks, you are going to feel like shit. You're going to cough more than you did when you were smoking (I didn't have a smoker's hack till I quit) but look at that as your lungs ridding themselves of the toxins that are leftover. You're going to feel tired, but you can substitute coffee for that (just don't get addicted to coffee!). I bought a bunch of rubber bands which I kept on my wrist and I would play with them when I felt I needed to do something with my hands. (I didn't have a boyfriend then or else I would have found something else to do ;) ). I also stopped putting so much salt on my food because I could taste it better but the greatest thing was getting my sense of smell back full force. Flowers never smelled so good!
You will gain weight. You can't stop it from happening-it has to do with metabolism changing and cigarettes being an appetite surpressant. I don't know how vain you are, but weight can be lost-lung cancer can't be cured. When I decided to lose weight after quitting, I found I could exercise harder because I could breathe better.
I wish you the best of luck Leslie. :)
Yeap, all those brown yellowish things that you're going to spit out when you cough are nasty, real nasty, after i quit i got "sick", a lot of coughing and a lot of nasal flow....
BTW, your stomach will feel better too, since smoking also damages it.

a pack a day here. more power to you!
I quit drinking beer almost 5 years ago. I loved beer and drank as much as I could get. It was very tough to quit cold turkey. Nobody helped me. You have to want it for yourself.
If you are determined, you can quit smoking and it not only make you proud of yourself for doing it but other people will appreciate it too.
I was a beast when I drank. Now, I can walk past the booze isle and never even give it a second thought. If I can quit beer, you can quit cigarrettes. You can do it!
:headbang: Still going! 9 hours now.
Good for you, s4. I think that's almost harder than smoking to quit.
You're doing great, Leslie :headbang:
My mom has to quit, and she's taking the taper-off approach... she used to smoke 2-3 packs a day... The past couple days, she has only taken a few puffs of one cigarette then put it out. Too bad she had to take a few trips to the hospital before figuring this out :(
Thanks, fury! :errrr: :D
Did your mom try the gum? That might help her ease off a bit without actually using the cigarettes.
At least in my case, i know that what used to need was a cigarrete not nicotine, those gums and patch doesn't work.
Qutting cold turkey is much more effective than trying to taper off. I quit beer cold turkey and have never went back to it since.

My Mom quit smoking after 30 years with the nicorrette gum. It worked for her for 10 years. Until she just started again last year. That pissed me off to no end. :mad2:

i used to go heavy heavy on the alchohol as well, gettin drunk everyday in college (nights) even puttin rum in my coffe thermoflask, and smoked weed heavily (8 spliffs a day).
Though i guess thats more of an adolecent ego thing than addiction, soon as i sorted myself i only get a little drunk now and then (twice a month at most) and maybe smoke some chronic once or twice a week if ever. Gonna try quitting smoking, cut down to maybe 4-7 cigs a day now.
still clean huh??

Take my advice......stop the gums, you don't need nicotine (and you could end up being addicted to those gums)....better yet, if you're going to buy gums don't buy nicotine ones.
Words of th day.
word = palabra
of = de
the = el/la (i must remind you that sustantives are male/female too)
day = día (with that little line above the i)
the complete sentence would be: palabra de el día, but "de el" is incorrect and should be replaced for del: palabra del día

I lost a good friend to cancer last week, and have lost other members of my family to cancer, probably caused by smoking.
I'd rather not loose any more frends in the same manner.

funny side issue - i've quit, and now I seem to have developed pleurisy. (a little lung infection)
Thinking positive though! And it's definitely better than cancer! :D :headbang:
you may find that you get the odd little lung/throat infection while things recover and can be got to by bacteria. glad to hear you've stuck to it! :)
greenfreak
5/21/02, 10:39am
Pleurisy is a bitch-makes it tough to breathe sometimes, huh? Like I said, your lungs are repenting--you'll get through it. I couldn't continue smoking when I developed bronchitis and later, walking pneumonia-I just couldn't smoke when I was sick. That might act as a deterrent for you-you won't want to smoke when you can't breathe to begin with??
I hope you feel better. :) Stay strong, you went through childbirth for God's sake, you can do this. :)
I'm definitely getting there. Sick never stopped me from smoking, I was always that desperate - through other bouts of pleurisy, strep throat, anything.
But now I'm feeling better physically and can reason out that I don't want to pollute myself again, so it is a good incentive, and it is getting easier to cope with. The little voices in my head are fading now. :D
I think childbirth was easier, drugfree though it was

Sorry, just had to repeat my self.
:headbang:
Cigarret's advertising risks should say: "smoking increases dramatically the posibility of dying"
Here they do! :D
There is no tv or print advertising allowed, no coupons, and no discounts allowed either. They are also in the process of banning all sponsorship of public events by tobacco companies as well.
On every package there is a frightening message and a revolting/scary picture to go with it, you can look here (http://www.infotobacco.com/warnings.html), click on the messages to see the pics and the full text on each pack.
The warnings in here are similar...
But no single warning says: "if you smoke you'll die, for sure", nor the other warning i posted before
No I guess they don't, but it's a start. :D Here they hit people in the vanity - the mouth cancer one is grody  , the impotence one seems to hit home with men, and the quit rate has jumped since the pictures came out. So that's something.
Wow, canadians read the warnings.......unfortunately, mexicans don't....
You can't help it here, the picture must take up 50% of the package. It is in your face. :D
They were collectors items for awhile, but the point is getting across for those who are ready, those who aren't wouldn't quit anyway.
They should change the brand as well:
Camel = Camdeath

I'll save that list....by coïncidence, I decided to quit smoking a week ago. Threw away half a package, and stopped just out of the blue. It just didn't taste that good anymore.
Reading all those benefits motivate me even more not to smoke :)
I know I don't have to smoke even 1 cigarette, ot otherwise I'll start immediately again.
Made that mistake after quitting smoking for three years...1 cigarette ruined it all. Won't let that happen again!

Depends on who's asking. I don't think it looks cool at all. :alienhuh:
On the weekends though see if you can get ahold of some Clove ciggys.
Plus, they don't have the chemicals added that make them keep burning, like regular cigarettes do. With a normal cig, when you walk away for a few minutes it keeps burning, and is wasted. With a clove cig, when you walk away for a few minutes, it will go out. You just re-light it when you get back to it and a lot less is wasted that way.

sounds more like pointing out how weird this discussion is. you never hear people saying "look at me, i started smoking "
furthermore, did you ever hear people saying "i quit eating junk food in enormous amounts!" or "i'm clean for two weeks on burgers now "
note: a hell of a lot more people die from obesitas than smoking. or lack of physical excersize...
just pointing out that you should look at things a bit relatively ;)
Funnier still, more people are getting fatter because they quit smoking, thereby eliminating any benefits of stopping cigs. *raises hand to attest*

You know the thing is, to me, smoking looks really cool. Yes we all know the health benefits are nigh but damn it just looks so cool.
We all die anyway....might as well die looking cool.
Ill prolly get a lot of slack for this but I thnk its sexy to have a woman who smokes

To each his own.
I rarely think smoking "looks" cool, but I suppose there are certain situations ... none come to mind off hand, though.
I quit smoking when I was about 20 or so, been about 4 years now (quit smoking cigarettes). I love it. I can breathe.
Ain't nothing sexy about that smell.

So how's it going?
Still smoke-free? eh?
One year & a couple of (miserable) weeks.
5 years so far. Occasionally I have dreams where I'm smoking *shivers*
I quit smoking last week, but it wasn't cigarettes. :(

Well..if you've quit smoking joints, that's not a bad thing, either. More tar than cigarettes.

Not me :crying4: I need help!
I just don't have the will-power I guess, and the doc moved
my appointment back to Aug. :alienhuh:
A lot of it's environment. You're in a house full of smokers. I doubt I could have done it under those circumstances.

I'll wager I know what happened too. Reflex. Either you reflexively picked up a cig, or took one when someone else reflexively offered. A buddy of mine got nailed for smoking in the subway here. $300 fine. Didn't even realize he had one. Hell, we've all seen someone light a cig, when their last one is sitting half smoked in the ashtray right under their nose.
Still a non-smoker & still awaiting the good part of quitting
I have been considering it for a good while, and finally decided yesterday to quit this morning.

Yeah I've long wundered if givin' up the twin monkeys of caffeine and nicotine
would be more painful than simply continuing to let them go along for the ride
and end up dying in screaming agony from some terminal debilitating disease

LOL, my mom finally quit a bit more than a year ago -- after having a mini-stroke -- and recently, her healthy tastebuds grew back. she was eating ketchup, and when she was a smoker, she never realized how much flavor it had!
she was feeling a little bitter before then, because food-tasting-better was one of the perks-of-not-smoking i kept telling her about when she was quitting, and it took a long time for it to actually happen.
6 years later, and you finally quit, lol
Have you quit?

I can't recommend Champix/Chantix enough.
It's been almost a year and it's been really super close to painless. I am sooo happy!
I gave up on trying to quit for a while.
it just made me smoke more.
I'm waiting for the e-cig.

Scarier than not seeing your kids get married?
Only reason I'd want to quit is to get to see my as of yet
unborn grand-daughter become a smokin' hawt teenager.
Hmmm lemme do the maths on that one.

SMOKE.... SMOKE.... SMOKE!!!! ARE YOU SMOKING YET?
5+ year sof pure hell.
If only Phillip Moris would demand their money back.
So Gonz what yer sayin’ here is that you’ve gone thru 60+ months of Hell since you’ve stopped suckin’ on the fags?
If I died tonight no one would miss me, why should I make my life on earth
a living Hell, as I’m sure to spend eternity in Hades anyway?

Because I'm not paying their BS fine.
although, perhaps living hell was stretching it. I haven't noticed improvement in my health or any other functions.
