View Full Version : should condoms be passed out in schools?
This is an easy poll. I liked the other one so much that I decided to ask another thought provoking question.

i think so, unfortunately kids are having sex much earlier, even when not mentally mature enough to handle the possibe concequences.
I don't think so; it encourages pre-marital sex. :D
An idea would be to sell them in the bathrooms for a quarter, not just give it to them and say "have at it!" ;) That way if they are going to do it, they have easy access to them.
Condoms contain small parts. ;)
Kids could choke....
MuFu.
NO. HELL NO. Absofuckinglutely not. Let 'em go embarass themselves at Walgreens like the rest of us. An even better idea, in order to receice them, have their parents sign a release waiver.
Yes. Teens will have sex whether or not they have a condom. At least if schools offer condoms, the percentages of teens using condoms will rise, and maybe decrease the spread of diseases and unwanted pregnancies.
where in the school referendum does it endorse birth control?

Its is inappropirate for the education facilities to huck tax monies out the door on stuff that has nothing to do with education. Let them spend the money from their own mf pockets... quit picking mine.

Tough one. I agree with Gonz, in that it pisses me off they don't have to stand there with a jumbo economy size case of them with old women staring. :)
On the other hand, unc, health education is just as important for the continued growth of our society as math, science, and reading is.
I'd have to vote yes, reluctantly.

You are right, Teach them health. Just don't give 'em rubbers.

Yep, that's correct. I like sbcanada's idea of putting them in vending machines though.

Don't just give them away. Make the kids earn them. That way, they'll learn to appreciate them more...
I also like the vending machine in the boys room idea, but charge 50 cents instead of 25. Better yet, charge the same amount as the most popular video arcade game.

All of these plans assume for a flickering moment that these kids are capapble of one lick of responsibility. Any kid that is 'just going to do it anyway' can't be trusted to even care to use protection when the time comes. Responsible kids wouldn't put themselves in such a position in the first place. Responsible kids would seek out protection on their own merits without needing a government handout.

I don't know. When I was that age I was responsible...no matter what went wrong... :D
Instead of the vending machine idea, how about if they have to buy them from a person in charge of health issues that hands out brochures on std and pregnancy?
In addition, what about having a Catholic Priest around in case they need to be shown how to use them? That might change their minds about sex altogether. :D
No. Arrest kids who spread STD's, though. Having sex with someone while you have aids or some other deadly disease is akin to outright killing that person, so why shouldn't it be treated the same?
If you want the kids to use condoms, make them easily accessible. They should also be taught what they are and how to use them in sex-ed. :D
If you put them in vending machines in the boy's washrooms at school, they'd have to pay for them and then it wouldn't be taxpayers money. If kids are going to do it no matter what, then have condoms accessible to them, teach them why they should use them, and most of them will use them.
I don't know about making them go embarress themselves in order to get them; then some kids won't bother and they'll just do it without protection.

I had an ex-girlfriend who got herpes a few months after we split up. Let all of 'em learn the hard way:D.
Yeah, put 'em in vending machines...make the little suckers use their lunch money. Put the vending machines in the cafeteria so they can see what's for lunch and make an informed decision. :D

Silly me. I thought that was a parent's job.
But if you're gonna put them in the washrooms .... put them in the girl's. That way, there's less chance of a guy using a 5 year old rubber just to get some.

$2/pop works for me.

The cool hip thing to do is to NOT use a condom?
Funny, when I was in school there was a girl who got knocked up 3 or 4 times and kept getting abortions, then it got to the point where the doc said "No more, you have to carry this baby and then if you don't want it put it up for adoption" (something about performing an abortion being risky because of her previous ones or something). Anyway, none of us thought she was cool...we all thought she was a dumbass for not using protection. Hell, we doubled up on the pregnancy protection. I won't get into how bad the pill really is and how I regret filling my body with artificial hormones for so many years...but the point is that NOT getting a disease and NOT getting knocked up was the cool thing to do.
Well the cool hip thing to do is being not wearing one, i feel sorry for the girls though.
Also, why do you feel sorry for the girls? If they let a guy get away with not wearing a rubber then it's just as much their fault as it is his.
I have my own stash, if I'm dating someone and I think things may go in that direction I even carry a couple in my purse. People need to be accountable for their own actions and even though I wouldn't be the one wearing it I still need to be responsible because the potential consequences affect me just as much as the guy (maybe more so because I'd have to be preggers for 9 months).
Passed out???? Boys should have to go to the drug store and pay the 70 year old lady clerk while blushing furiously just like I did! We coddle our children too much.
Indeed. I'll supply the first batch along with a tutorial but after that you're going to buy them. I'll be happy to pay for them in a pinch but if you ar old enough to use them you are old enough to buy them.

If they hand out condoms, they should hand out diaphragms, too. Condoms are not 100% and it is the responsibility of both parties to protect themselves.
Why does it always boil down to whether a man is wearing a condom or not? Outside of surgery, that's the only birth control we have to use, while women have several methods available. Although I have heard and read about a male birth control pill in the works.

Because while preventing pregnancy is important preventing disease is JUST AS IMPORTANT if not more so. In a pinch an unwanted pregnancy can be dealt with by putting the baby up for adoption (which obviously shouldn't be used as an excuse to be stupid, but in a pinch it's an option)...you can't adopt out HIV, herpes, genital warts or HPV though. The only protection against disease (except making everyone you sleep with have a test before hand and making them show you the results) is condoms. True, there are female condoms but from what I hear they're not good at all...I've never used one but I've had guys tell me it's like "fucking a plastic bag" because of the material they're made out of.

Oh, and diaphragms are typically custom fit, that's not something you just buy over the counter. I'm all for both parties have to take responsibility but what it boils down to is unless you're in a committed relationship and you've both been tested a condom needs to be used...even if one or both parties have are using other birth control methods (surgical or not). That said, women who are sexually active should carry condoms...that way if they man doesn't have one they're both still protected.

I was referring to pregnancies. I know a condom is the only way to prevent disease, but there are still risks with that. Testing before hand would be the ideal solution. :swing:

Well, from a pregnancy sense it doesn't always come down to condoms. In a committed relationship where both parties have been tested and there are other birth control methods in place then there's really no use for condoms.

Besides, this topic is about whether condoms should be handed out in schools. It would seem appropriate to think that the main idea behind this is preventing teen pregnancy.
If there are a lot of kids in school with std's, someone should be looking into where they are getting them from. Or can you be born with an std?

I don't think anyone was referring to committed relationships either. How many kids in school are in committed relationships?

You can be born with an STD. You can get certain STDS (at minimum HIV) from your mother at birth. Also, cold sores are a kind of herpes and they can be transferred from a person's face to their genitals if they touch an active sore on their face and then touch themselves.

I was, I had a 2 year relationship in highschool. I was totally paranoid so I always made him use a condom even though I was on the pill...but it was purely from a pregnancy stand point.

Yeah but that was high school. What about middle school? I'm beginning to think the wording of this topic was too broad and unfocused.
But the reality is it's not my problem anymore. "My problem" referring to the condoms in school topic. I've been out of school for a long time. And I know how to protect myself.

You can be a carrier of an STD for years without knowing it. You can spread it but not have symptoms yourself.

Kids of 13 given secret condoms
By BEN ASHFORD
Published: Today
CHILDREN as young as 13 are being offered free condoms at school without their parents’ knowledge.
All “non-faith” secondary schools in Manchester have agreed to let their nurses hand out contraceptives and advice about sex.
The move is aimed at reversing the city’s rising teenage pregnancy rate, which is 50 per cent higher than the average figure for England.
But critics branded it “quite wrong” and said it would encourage under-age kids to have sex.
Parents are NOT told when schoolkids ask for contraception or advice, although mums and dads were consulted before the scheme was introduced.
In theory the service could be offered to 11 and 12-year-olds.
But local council sources said any evidence of sexual activity among children of that age would trigger an investigation.
Eighty primary schools are also teaching pupils about relationships, conception and birth.
Nick Seaton, of the Campaign for Real Education, said: “Handing out contraceptives in secondary schools simply works as an incentive.
“This sort of thing should not be the purpose of schools.”
Manchester City Council said: “We are working to ensure young people have the means to avoid unwanted sexual experiences and practise safer sex.”

Late bloomer then?
Yeah, the great things about starting "late" are:
you miss out on all those wonderful experiences like being a teenaged Daddy,
and STD's and all that stuff.
Gee, I feel SO deprived!
Damn, I wish my parents hadn't been so strict!
(That's sarcasm- in case you don't get it where you live)
And seriously- if you don't become sexually active until age 18 or 19-
you are still un-jaded and horny into your 40's.
It is unfortunate that people get all "sexed out" in their teen and twenties
-they are sad and worn-out by the time they get old enough to appreciate it!

 JTP, I've been doing it for 38 years so far (I'm 52, you can do the math) and I have experienced no decrease in desire or performance yet. I have no biological progeny and have never contracted an STD. For much of that time I was a full time musician and very active (total fucking horndog, truth be told). If I ever do experience a performance issue, well, they make a pill for that now don't they. I find it wildly unlikely that I'll ever experience any decrease in desire, but I suppose anything is possible. You actually know people in their teens or twenties who think that they're "all sexed out?" Perhaps when they grow up they'll learn how to do it right. Perhaps not, really not my problem. I will agree that there are certainly people who have sex at what you consider an early age that are not ready to become sexually active, but I suspect that a lot more never have a problem.
BTW, Gato, I knew about condoms around age 10 as well. I might have made some of JTP's water balloons at that age. :D
I guess it depends on the individual. I work with people in their late 20's and early 30's and hear them complain that they're "burnt out" on sex because they started in their teens. Maybe they just need the right vitamins or something.:sex2: Eat more oysters!
I'm just grateful that I got a "late start" meself because so many of my friends had to quit their education to get a job to support the kids that they "accidentally" created.
Can't feel too sorry for them, though. If you're too pesky to put on a condom, you will get what's coming to you- pun intended!
Maybe if the people think they're "sexed out" it's not because they started too early or have have too much sex in their life...maybe it's to do with theirs and their partners chemistry. I can think of a couple scenarios...
1 - someone is still sleeping around but maybe what they really want is a solid, dependable relationship so therefore they don't perform as they used to in bed/desire what they used to because even if they don't know it yet what they're doing/trying to do (be sexually permiscuous) is not what they really desire.
2 - someone is in a committed relationship but deep down isn't happy, doesn't love the other person, etc...so therefore their desire for sex with that person/their ability to perform would likely be diminished. Maybe the sex with that person USED to be awesome but maybe there are other factors in the relationship that is now making it not so awesome.
I went through a period of time where I didn't desire sex...it was because I was in a miserable relationship and I didn't wanna have sex with the guy but I also wasn't the type to cheat and I hadn't yet figured out how to get out of the relationship.
Once I did get out I was like a dog on a bone (haha pun intended).

I voted yes, as there was no other option.
If there was an other option, I'd choose it and say we ought to teach abstinence until the kids are mature enough to handle sex (it can really impact you mentally, and I don't think most teens are ready for that, even if their bodies are). And in this abstinence, I think we ought to praise/encourage (private) masturbation (taboo, I know).
I voted yes, as there was no other option.
"NO" isn't showing up for you?
If you make something taboo, the kids are going to want to find out more about it. Best to lay sex right there on the table for all to see. (pun intended)
All kidding aside, I'd rather pay for a couple of condoms than my tax dollars being spent on supporting some teenager's unplanned baby.
How about...let the teenager pay for whatever it is & leave the taxpayer out of it.
should condoms be passed out in schools?
not unless the condoms have been drinking too much...:eek10:
How about...let the teenager pay for whatever it is & leave the taxpayer out of it.
That'd work great if teenagers were actually educated as to why they should be going and buying the damn things. As it is in many cases, they're misinformed as to the reasons for condoms, and are far too embarrassed to walk up to the counter at a local pharmacy with a box in hand - to face the looks and potential lectures that come with someone young buying them.
then they are too damn young to be fucking
How about...let the teenager pay for whatever it is & leave the taxpayer out of it.
I wouldn't mind that either. So long as I'm not paying for a bunch of teenage mothers and neglected babies. :silly:
