Wondering how many mods will be on this site. I see fury, and sbcanada has appointed himself, I saw 3 mentioned at HWC thread.
I'd like to say that I'd think that justintime would be an appropriate 3rd mod, he seems interested in the position, he is on HWC pretty much 24/7, he replies to many questions, sticks with the threads until the problems are solved, and in addition he goes out of his way to search for and post current events to inform others. He also takes responsibility for what he posts from what I have seen and has posted nothing inappropriate or beyond the scope of the board's limits on several boards. That's where my vote goes.
By setting up this board and being the technical administrator of the site this board is on, fury is an admin. Since samcurry owns the site this board is on and offered to host a board for OT'ers on our space and pipe, he is also an admin.
sbcanada is the head mod, due to coming up with the idea in the first place of having a site dedicated to OT (at least, that's what I gathered when I read the feedback forum at the other place - if someone will prove me wrong, I'll gladly humble myself)
That leaves 2 mod positions open, and I agree with your nomination of Justintime. I've never ever seen Justintime step out of line or give false advice or resort to (f)lame tactics in order to get his point across. Plus, he's awake when most of us are all asleep, so no midnight trolls can come by and ruin our fun :D
Fury, glad you cleared it up, sorry to call you mod instead of admin, that is what the board is saying at the moment so that's what I went with, I knew you were higher, didn't know what exactly.
I'll let go sbcanada coming up with it - I think I did a couple of months ago, but not this big and not this time. He can have the glory, I don't need it. :P :D
So is there to be an offical vote, or are posts like this one going to be taken into consideration, or have you guys not got that far yet? I think it's kind of important, as the mods and admins would set the tone of the board, especially in the beginning.
No biggie. I had to set myself up as moderator of that forum until we had some mods to fill the position. I don't care what I'm called :D
We're planning to have mods nominated and voted in by the members, so that the moderators effectively represent the kind of person the members would like to see run the forums
Check out my Gavel... doesn't it make me seem so... judicial? :D
Future Mods will be voted in. We'll probably create a Poll with every nominee listed, and members can choose who they want as Moderator.
We'll have to wait a while until we establish a membership base before we can have elections.
I don't care who the mods are as long as they don't mess with my posts. I never get out of line. As for who started this idea, I feel the need to set the record straight. Back when Toolbox ejected us OT people out of the General forum at HWC, I was among the members that originally suggested a seperate forum at HWC. I lobbied long and hard to get it. I had no idea that certain people were going to act like they did.
And the glory goes to *drumroll* s4 and members of the period! (which, sadly, I missed as I just leapt into the nineties in Jan. 2002) :)
I'm just telling you how it came about. I am not looking for glory. I am stating the facts. If I wanted glory I would have accepted the admin position when sbcanada offered it yesterday before Sam came along and offered to host it. If you read the thread at HWC, you will see that I declined it in the first place. If I had really wanted glory I would of run right out and got some hosting myself to do this. I didn't do any of those things.
Alrighty, then. ?( I realized all of that when I read your post here but I didn't realize that you were SO serious. I will not quip any more. :)
It doesn't really matter who's idea it was. What DOES matter is who helped to create this forum. Fury and Sam Curry deserve the most credit, followed by myself... :D
I just decided to give L. Summerton the biz. 8o
I was off reading something else and forgot all about it. :D

So was it good for you? Are you done yet? :P
You can't truly be that serious, can you? I haven't seen many of your past posts/threads so I don't yet know where you're coming from. I guess I'll find out. Looking forward to it. :D
I can get very serious if I really want to, but not over the glory of this board. :D
If you want to know more about me, go to the forums at Xibase. I post all kinds of news stories over there. Once in a while I start a serious topic about world affairs. I have 3700 posts over at HWC but unfortunately half of them were in the OT forum and are gone. No, I am not that serious about stupid things. :P
Glad to hear it! :) I've browsing Xibase (lurking more like it) for the past month or so, haven't gotten around to joining yet but having looked back this afternoon, it was your posts that made me want to join to reply. We'll have some interesting chats, likely. :D

Are you searching for mods based upon the HWC old guard types? ..or are you looking for pretty much anyone who has had such a job before from any number of related sites?

Any member can be a moderator, but it's the population who will make the descision to hire you or not. :)

No offense Unc, but we might as well make JJR a mod. You have 10k posts over there.

I think voting in new mods is the way to go.
I'm sure there will be quite a few willing to offer their help once the word is out in force at HWC, but you can go ahead and put my name on the list.

Just because I'm the number one post monkey over at JJRs, it does not make me JJR, nor does it make me a JJR stooge. It just happened to be my first BBS. It became my primary hangout. Are you saying that my mere association with JJRs site is going to leave me with a pariah tag of some kind?

I'm not so sure that I'm into the whole popularity contest thing. Why can't the existing admin structure hammer it out amongst themselves? They know who most of us are, what our personalities are suited to, our general online times, and base temperment. They can slowly let people in as needed. An open voting campaign could end up putting a VectraP in power. *shudder*

4/15/02, 07:44pm
i guess its the retro HWC old days thing, where members were voted to be mods, now they're chosen.
Yeah, a real power-abusing tyrant could be voted in as a moderator... I shutter to think... :D
As Super Mod I will fire moderators (subject to Admin approval of course) and call another election if they prove to be incompetent. :)

s4, if all you want to do is bitch about how someone's post count at another board is so high that they'll be biased and leak information out to that site, then I think you need to check your nerve pills, cause I think you're forgetting to take them.
I have over 4100 posts at XiBase, nearly 1100 posts at JJR's, over 3600 at Force3d, over 1000 at Q3arena.com. Yet those post counts do not change a thing.
No offense, but try to keep your paranoia out of this for a change.

I'm sorry you feel that way, but I just really dislike it when you judge someone by their post count.
Now that you've edited your post with some more comments, let me ask you this. Who was it that stuck with it that first time you left moderating at xibase and tried to convince you that you don't need to stick up for anyone but yourself because he was a friend who really didn't want to see you leave the site? Who was it that initially vouched to make you a supermod there, because he enjoyed your posts and trusted your judgement with moderation over the entire board? Who, in the HELL, took ALL your suggestions to heart and considered each and every one of them, and most of the time, made them reality?
When was it that you turned into someone who cared about post counts so much that you would count unclehobart out from being a moderator JUST BECAUSE he has 13000something posts at JJR's site and were afraid there would be a spy problem involved?
When was it that I implied you had to kiss my ass to become a mod?
The choice is yours, but personally, I will miss your contributions, however worthless you may think they are. I like them (most of the time) and they make me think, and that's a rare occasion

Nah, I don't have the power to do that. And I don't want to try either, cuz I like my job. :)
s4, why do you hate unclehobart just because he has lots of posts at another site? What if I said that I have 50,000 posts at JJR's site? Would you hate me to?

Now I see the crux of the matter. I had a falling out Q on another site. She claimed I was trying to start shit which was far from the case. No matter how many times I tried to explain my meaning, it cemented in her mind that I was trying to end two years of friendship, without cause, without reason, in the distance of one line printed in a restricted forum that has the eyes of less than 10 people. I made one joke at the tail end of a line of jokes. She took it the wrong way... hard. She now despises me. I can't say why she took it the wrong way nor would not accept my clarifications on the matter. I haven't returned to Xi in a week because of it. Its her primary world. If she has declared me to now be a mortal enemy... it cannot be unwound. I have decided to leave Xi to her in peace thinking that we could go on separately... but it seems as if S4 wants to be the one starting shit here.
Suddenly one stupid joke line means that suddenly I am a total untrustworthy spying manipulative ass after two years of reasonable trusting behavior? Jebus Christmas.. : / I left and never mentioned it... you did. If anyone is starting shit here it is you. If you don't know me by now, you never will. I suddenly no longer want to know you anymore either.

fury is a power hungry crazy freak... and wouldn't make an admins left testicle... Only for the fact Neo doesn't know to set up a BB he is here...lol...Neo's stooge.
s4 is a long standing loyal member of all the BB's he mentioned... loyal beyond words.
And make me a mod... I was after all a moderator of HWC Off Topic
Somehow, I don't see paranoia of another site's member as being equal to loyalty.
From what I gathered, s4, you equate the notion of unclehobart as a mod with JJR512 being a mod. How that happened, I don't know, because JJR512 is not even registered here yet, and as long as I have known unclehobart, he has never shown any signs of being JJR512, nor has JJR512 ever shown any signs of being unclehobart. :D
You decided to make that snide remark, so I returned with some of my own. Then I got something about a "magic words to get me to leave", and a "Fuck off!" Since when did words on the web matter anyway? I was only pointing out that post counts should be a moot point in the same (or mostly similar) way that you were pointing out that you thought unclehobart would practically be JJR512.
I don't think I ever implied that unclehobart has done more than you have, only that, like I said, post counts shouldn't matter.
By the way, you're not getting banned for saying something. That's not the way it goes. If you really want to get banned, repeatedly post some porn or warez. :headbang:
http://www.colute.net/cwm//contrib/corky/corkysm77.gif
s4, you took a jab at someone when none of us were able to see why. For that reason, a few people jumped to unclehobart's defence, as could be expected.
It's pointless packing your bags and leaving when we've yet to really hear your side of the story. We still don't know what has made you so angry. Put it plainly for us, this is OT, say your mind. Why do you feel the way you feel about unclehobart?
s4 and sbcanada lobbied HWC to get an offsite OT forum going.... dont you think s4 would be pissed not being asked to help moderate here?
unclehobart
4/16/02, 07:44am
Umm... can anyone show me one place... one lousy place where I asked to be made a mod? I was just trying to get an idea of the footing and basis for the site in general as a matter of course. It was being set up as an HWC offshoot... but set up by XiBase admin. This left me confused as to the general direction the site was expected to take.
I could really care less to be made a mod. I don't exist to hear the 'behind closed doors' whisperings that go on in mod hideouts. Its not a matter of what you have done for the site or how long you have been around... or post count... or ability to compile and hack code ... or talk shit with the best of them. Mods are supposed to be the stable and mature types with a certain rational detachment and ability to judge a situation fairly without threatening or alienating people out of hand. It should have nothing to do with sheer popularity contests and this 'pick me! pick me!' BS.
Bubba, Consider your source before you go off accusing people of stooging.

I don't even have that much loyalty to the JJR site. I certainly have no loyalty to Justin himself. We rarely speak in the best of times. Hell... I even left the JJR DC team a while back. Explain to me how that makes me a loyalist? My post count was mostly derived from my being a mod of the usless trivia forum. A good 4000 of my posts are nothing more than: yes, no, correct, incorrect, and cut and paste Trivial Pursuit.
Can't we all just get the **** along anymore? Is that too much to ****ing ask?!

What am I supposed to do? Let him call me an arrogant stooge spy out of the clear blue and let it pass? Hes questioned my very integrity. He started it. Either he ends it or I will end him.
All allegations aside, being a good Moderator does entail more then popular choice (but hopefully people keep this in mind if it comes to that). Some of the basic principals of moderating include:
* A moderator must have patience, be it with a newbie, or with someone who is stiring up trouble.
* A moderator needs tact, in knowing how to best handle people and situations.
* A moderator needs a cool temperament. One can't simply go blowing their top every time someone dints their pride.
Being friendly, active and helpful are other basic requirements ;)
Krusty, s4 had already stated he had no interest in being an Admin or a Mod. sbcanada had already offered him the position of Admin and s4 respectfully declined.
hardwarecentral (http://discussions.hardwarecentral.com/Forum12/HTML/000673-2.html)
sbcanada:
Alrighty, so s4 is the Administrator, MitchSchaft is the host, Justintime and sbcanada are moderators... only one thing left...
s4:
I really appreciate the nod of being an admin, but I must decline. However, I'd more than welcome the opportunity to join and help out as a member. I've never really liked being a moderator even when I was a mod at Xibase. Being a member is cool!
Sorry guys thats weird...
I was chatting to s4 on ICQ and he gave me the impression he'd been passed over.
Fair enough. Sounds like there was a vast misunderstanding. He'd given us a strong indication he had no interest in the position, otherwise he'd probably be at least a Moderator now going by sbcanada's offer.
Seems strange talking about s4, I'd rather give him the respect of talking with him. Would you at least let him know of the topic's continuation krusty?
Im sure he'll be back to look here today sometime... I will also tell him next time I see him... I don't mind being the devil's advocate... but I hate stirring shit when I'm mis-informed.
It's not weird. I threw my hat in the ring to be a mod yesterday morning as one of the first things I did when I got here. In fact, I discussed it with Fury at great length in chat yesterday morning. He told me I would have to be voted in with the rest of the mods if I wanted it.
http://otcentral.xibase.com////thread.php?threadid=2&boardid=1&page=1
sbcanada knew I wanted to be a mod too, but since he was given the job right off the bat, he only cared about himself and he was bragging about how powerful he feels.
My appologies then s4, I wasn't aware of the full story :o
It's your choice to stay or leave, but it is a shame to see someone leave like this when the board is still so young :(
(Oh, and congradulations on being the new Super Mod) ;)
How come s4 has supermod title... rofl... he resigned without even test driving.
Patience...everything cant be done in 8 hours. :D
s4, I know I was a little power crazy yesterday, forgive me as I've never been a moderator before and I was going on very little sleep. I think my pride will be a little lesser today, but is that neccessarily a good thing? I'm not ashamed nor sorry for being enthusiastic about this site or being a moderator.
If you want to stay, I'd welcome you as a mod.

That's a relief. I was getting just a bit worried about the ego trip... glad to see it's in check now. ;)
Yesterday was filled with many mistakes, some of them mine. When I talked to you that day s4, I never got the impression that you desired the position, as you frequently referred to how much you hated being a mod at XiBase, and how you felt there wasn't anything wrong with you just being a member. If that was just the way I interpreted it, then it was my mistake, but that is how I gathered things, even after reading the log over again. I feel bad about the way I practically cut you off now, after thinking about it. Now I've realized that you do want to volunteer for this, and I'm happy now that you've got what you wanted.
The way I blurted off after your comment about unclehobart was a little harshly worded, I kind of let my feelings talk before my mind had a chance to sort it out. In the frame of mind I was in, I couldn't stand by and let a friend of mine get a black mark on his name that didn't need to be there, and of course, I still don't want that kind of thing to happen. Of course, unclehobart never asked for me to step in and defend him, so if he wants me to cease, I will by all means.
I don't apologize for the idea I attempted to get across about post counts not having to matter, but I do apologize for how it was worded. That is one thing that I never seem to get through my thick skull, that the way my words are put can really make a difference.
