I want to say something here, and will be as light footed as I can. I am hoping that without me getting real specific you will know exactly what I am saying.
"If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all"
...and I mean that in reference to what is said to other poster(s).
We are supposed to be the mature adults here.

I just get discouraged when I see adults pick on a little kid who has no parental guidance and has fallen prey to others who aren't showing any compassion. Actually, kinda makes me feel sick to my stomach, but that's just me, I have a tendancy to be overly sensitive. Maybe I am being unreasonable to some, but I don't think I am.
I see your point, to a degree, but...
If a person spends any time here at all, they will soon realize that the majority of the posters are adults. If you can't handle an adult world, then it's time to leave. Pick on him? Nah, we are simply educating him in the ways of the world. I would much rather have been picked on when I was a kid than to go through my teen years thinking everyone was going to be nice to me, all the time. That would have been a harsh reality check when I entered the workforce.

I pick on him with humor..And I think he knows its humor. You would have to look hard to find posts by me that aren't in humor. What do we do? He Jumps into adult discussions and they get derailed because we're trying not to say the wrong thing in front of him. He shouldn't be in this forum. Sorry, but he should be pursueing a forum more his level....To be honest, he worries me. Things we say could have a lot of influence on him, yet, hes beyond our control...And he says some pretty scarey shit for his age...
I agree, he seems rather knowledgeable about some very adult subjects, but then claims ignorance on others. There is something wrong with that.
I for one am going to continue posting as I have, and if someone takes offence at it, Oh well. Read the sig.

Maybe it's time to think about raising the age limit for the board. I think 16 would be a good age. I mean, honestly... should we be explaining things like ribbed condoms and penis enlargement devices to 13 yr olds?

Those are an important five years. Do you really think you're doing yourself a favor by hanging out with people two to three times your age? You should be hanging with other 13-14 yr olds. You could definitely use an adult to help you get through these years, but no one here is prepared to take on that task. It's a job for your family.
I don't want you to think I'm insulting your intelligence. I think you have a lot of knowledge for a 13 yr old. You just don't have enough life experience to be socializing with adults, especially not in a place like this where very mature (and sometimes immature) subject matter gets discussed.

Here is a 13 yr old boy who is on the computer all the time, even at the wee hours of the morning when, in any healthy family with young kids, he should be in bed. So does this not tell you a little something? Maybe he's lonely? Maybe he has no guidance whatsoever and is trying to find a place to fit in? So here he finds a MB with adults in it where he can post too and he tries to fit in only to be ridiculed and belittled.
If you are uncomfortable saying certain things because you know a 13 yr old is going to read it, then don't take it up with him - take that up with whoever it is that sets the age limit for the board.
Imagine you're at a party. Someone brings thier child. He's 13. Do you respond to his "youthful"(read immature, ignorant, silly) remarks with belittlement or denigration? No. You either ignore it or chuckle along with him so he doesn't feel humiliated.
Can you see what I am saying? By the age limit as low as 13, we are saying that we allow children in this board - so collectively we have the responsibility of treating him (her) as such.
I am not saying we have to watch our topics or responses to eachother - meaning the older group who has a stronger sense of identity(well..hehe..sorta, you know what I mean).

Spirit, I wish him no harm. My point is that, we are in a no-win situation with our actions toward him...If we tolerate, he assumes acceptance. If we attempt to alienate, he assumes rejection. If we ignore, he assumes belittlement.... The only outcome that comes close to what you want for him is tolerance...Which leaves us discussing things we shouldn't in front of him....I'm just as uneasy with that....If he shows up in your thread and starts insisting,post after post, that you explain what you're doing with the whipped cream, do you lie? Do you tell him? Do you ignore him? Do you tell him to "ask his father"? None of those options is ideal for him be it long or short run....

Spirit's not asking us to clean up the board to give it a PG rating. She's just saying we shouldn't kick him quite so hard. I've done some kicking myself... honestly, he irritates me quite a bit at times. I understand Spirit's point of view, though, and I guess I'll try to do better.

There are so many other things a guy could lie about in order to get attention from the women on this board. Things that wouldn't box him in if he wanted to get more personal with them offline. I wouldn't want to underestimate the sort of things that people will lie about-- I've been told some pretty senseless lies before-- but I need more evidence to believe that he's lying about his age.
Some people do it just for the sheer entertainment value of causing the type of chaos this has precipitated.
It's the very reason each account needs it's own email addy, it's the very reason most boards frown on the use of Alter-egos.
Just his user name is a play on the word Alter.
I do know why one person in particular does it. He thinks it encourages people to post...and it does...the problem is, it always ends up making a mess like this.

Such same kid at such a party would also not be going around threatening to shoot his elders and burn them and be so overtly insulting. I don't recall starting the schizm ... but I won't idly sit by and give him a free pass because of his claimed age. I treat everyone as they treat others on an individual basis. If they ignore me, I ignore them. If they are cordial with me, I will be cordial with them. If they ride my ass, I will ride their ass.
I agree with little components of pretty much everyones responses .. but certainly not all. You have to live with 'what goes around comes around'. If he wants to be treated with respect and dignity he has to earn it. We all start out at neutral ... and we all dig ourselves a little hole. Its up to him to climb out of it... to play nice and cordial and ask inquisitively in a nicer tone of voice.
This isnt a military boot camp or a biker bar. We arent predisposed to agressive responses. It has to be drwan out of us via being pushed about. It would be nice if it did all diffuse ... but this is human nature after all.

You know, I've been wondering about that myself. Not so much something that I deduced myself, but your reaction to Altron. He has gotten a hell of a lot more unprovoked ribbing than anyone else here. And because of the source of that ribbing, I wondered what the underlying reason might be and hoped there was one.
Anyone who's been at this board from the beginning probably knows what Q is inferring and about whom she is talking. As I've said before (in threads that were locked and taken from general view), using tactics like trolling or making alts to stir shit and claiming that it helps the board is pitiful and misguided. It's usually done for personal gain and no other reason.
I wouldn't be at all surprised to find Altron is who I think he is. And if it is who I'm thinking, once again, the people who don't lie and stir shit are proved less important than the trolls by allowing them to remain.

I'll be the first to apologize profusely to you guys if someone can tell me the truth about Altron.
This is hardly 'chaos'. Everyone seems to have some sort of reasonable point. But I think what Spirit was originally saying is that when you respond to a 13 y/o, you have to bear a lot of things in mind...and that the result of that thinking should be a response that would not simply serve to satisfy your own annoyance at the kid.
Because that's why people are taking the piss out of him. It's frustrating having someone that young because they say things that we all might find silly. But what you have to get, is that taking the piss isn't gonna get him anywhere, and isn't gonna make him understand more.
Squiggy you made a good point about there being little option. But still...if there is a 'best' option then go for it. Ignoring a person who's annoying you is the most sensible thing to do, and better for everybody.

I've been saying this since HWC OT times. If you don't want a Troll don't feed him. If people didn't fight them, but instead ignored them, maybe OT could still exist. If you ignore there is no fuel to fire it.
As for Altron what makes you so mad about him? Is he annoying? Sometimes, but so are others here. Does he spam? Sure do others? Did he attacked someone else? Not that I've seen. Is he immature not much more than other people. He's an alter ego? Then I ask? Why should I care? He's being nice? Good. He's not? I will ignore. Did he told fake stories just to play me for fool? Am I a fool? No I'm a person who likes to be nice to others. I hope I willl feel like being a fool by doing that. Only one person on boards pissed me off to the point of being not nice, and he was an admin.
If you want to make fun of someone do it, if you are unsatisfied with his presence let him know, but be nice. Do not attack him just because you think he may be another person.

alladin he hasnt so much tried to cause trouble but as was said its difficult when he is very young and we need to explain things to him thats where it becomes uncomfy. personally i dont care either way he seems like a good guy and not trying to cause shit. but look at Jerreks thread about guys going down. that has one where it is uncomfy to talk like that. all of us know who we are and if you know anyone on here personally you know whether or not the IP is real. take all with a grain of salt. i do unless im taking about me. then i know myself well enough. but we dont knwo altron. but he says hes 13 ill take it as that. others arent being so lenient. talk to them to get a better side to what im saying.

If you say so Sammy, that's cool. I did go looking around on that other website today to check it out, possibly become a member. And found a thread started by Altron saying he's in Westchester NY, not Cherry Hill, NJ. So the jury's still out with me on whether he is who he says he is. I really don't want to start any more crap about this but if he is 13, then the question that some people posed on whether threads about sex, drugs and rock n' roll (;)) are appropriate or not is still open.
I am really undecided on that... Obviously, what we say here is going to have an affect on someone that young (sorry Alt but you're our youngest member so far) and it worries me that there are threads out there making drugs look cool. Some of you may think it's a great thing to experiment but if it was your 13 year old son, I think you might react differently.
We can't be his parents. I'm just saying I feel a little uncomfortable with it. I have no suggestions or anything, I don't even know where I stand myself. I'M JUST SO CONFUSED :confbang: ;)

The simple answer to his questions about adult stuff is either "Go ask your mom/dad" or "You'll find out when you get older".
I don't know about you, but the AUP is sufficiently restrictive to control children's exposure to non-scarring levels. I'm not about to reread every post I make to ensure that I don't include anything that the 'children' wouldn't understand. I spend all day doing that as is. If they read something they don't understand, they can bloody well look it up themselves. Or ignore it.
Personally, I feel somewhat akward about the thread "Two Girls Kissing" now. I mean, I wouldn't want my son to be exposed to that. But, then again, I would never let my kids on the computer without my supervision, that's why I keep it in the living room.
I don't want to have to censor myself, but I can't help but feeling like I will, to some extent, now.

I think that I've actually been the most cooperative with the lad. I recall answering at least half of his questions. I don't mind the questions ... I just don't like 8 rapid posts in a string that really should have been compressed into 2.
While we're on the topic, and now that I've had a chance to think about it fully, allow me to say that I don't really appreciate being called to task over being myself. It's not the members here who've stepped over a line by posting as themselves. It's you who have by trying to insinuate that we shoulod do anything differently.

First, this isn't a party. It's a board. There are some similarities, but some really major differences, too. Unless I know everybody at a party pretty well, I don't even think about discussing religion or politics. It's common on a board (possibly because it's tough to throttle someone through a keyboard :D )
Secondly, yes you are asking us to watch what we post. All we do here is post. You have a serious enough issue with the tone some of us take with a member to publicly scold. Sorry, but I'm not letting that one simply slip on by.

Exactly, Altron is not being treated as the rest of us. If he is not meant to read something, that's his problem. But his age is no excuse to be rude with him.

:nono: This topic is really eating at me... I admit to being one who has been less than gentle with Altron. I believe I was also the first to mention my discomfort when members were entertaining his fantasies with weapons of destruction. I was, perhaps, overtaken by disrespect for him once he actually threatened bodily harm if we didn't explain ourselves....That, coupled with the inconsistencies of his projected intelligence, gave rise to some of the doubts and suspicions that others have expressed here. I believe, now, that he is infact 13. And I believe he is from where he says. I live in that area and as I've stated, he answered my question correctly. My problem now is that, even though, by his own admission (on several occassions), he would be in "big trouble if his parents found out he was here", we are still entertaining his fantasies. Anyone who has parented children, and most who haven't, will understand that Spirit's concerns are sincere and legitimate. I have had to rethink my own actions because of that. I apologize to Altron for being less than proper in dealing with him. That said, I for one, will not participate in threads discussing weaponry, or answers to sexuallly explicit questions on his behalf. I think the level of adult themes and humor here at OTC are beyond him and I can't, with clear conscience, discuss that stuff with him...Especially knowing that it would be against his parent's wishes.

Until it was brought up, I had no idea of his age. But then, age means so little today. I know 18 year olds who are totally clueless, and 12 year olds who've got a solid grip on reality.
Then there's the problem of how old someone is, against how old they say they are. I'm certainly not gonna lose any sleep trying to analyse someone's posting technique to see if they're really who and what they say they are. S4 admits he posts as Bubba. Does he post any different from one persona to the other? I know that any time I've made a second user, it's been to post as a different person. The odds of anyone spotting that it's the same person at the keyboard are miniscule, because while I'm posting as that second person, I'm not Professur. I don't think, react, or even type the same way. I don't even have the same accent. Anyone fleuently bilingual does the same. To be fleuent, you have to think in the second language. Posting as a second user is just an extension of the same talent.
Hence, I treat every user as an individual until they tell me they're the same person. I also treat every individual as is they're lying to me with every post. I also treat every individual as is they really believe they're telling me the truth.

I have a couple of reasons for posting as Bubba. First, I think people get sick of s4. At times, I am not a nice as I could be when I post as s4. You may or may not have seen what I wrote to renegade a few days ago. I can't help it. s4 can be a stinker at times. Bubba is a kindler, gentler version of s4. Bubba doesn't get quite as nasty and people don't get quite as upset with the Bubba nickname as they do s4 sometimes.
Do I want to give up my s4 nickname? No, I like it myself. I like to use both nicknames and everyone knows it's me. I don't try to confuse people with it, and it's not used for evil purposes. s4 was the first nickname that I used. People started calling me Bubba. I didn't mind so I use both nicknames, and you can refer to me as either.
About Altron: I have never treated him badly and have never exposed him to anything that I wouldn't have seen or heard when I was that age. At 13 I was not born yesterday, and I suspect Altron knows a thing or two. So, let's quit treating him like he is 6. I do not believe there is a problem.

I understand where you're coming from. I'm a parent too. So's Homelan. But I reject the premise. We all come here under a certain set of rules, called the AUP. Asking us to censor ourselves beyond that set of rules is one thing. Telling us that you're dissapointed in us because we aren't is quite another.

your concerns showed you care i apologise for not posting in this earlier as i was never quite sure what to say. i try to be respectful of everyone and believe in waht they say unless they are lying. spirit remember homey does make some valid points as well as you do so dont disregard what hes saying in this as he has concerns as he himself is a parent. altrons parents are right to be ncomfy in his posting here as was said we are all pretty much in our 20s/30s for the most part few younger and more older(by older i mean 21 or older) and discussing things at OUR level and havent explained a lot to him. that said think about this: we dont explain he goes to parents(not saying you do altron its just something that could be happening) or the parents see it and dont want him having said knowledge of controversial subjects at his age

you can't expect a 13 year not to get any idea of what older people are like if you keep them separated from older people. when he gets older, you are doing him a disservice. this crowd is mild compared to some places on the web. if we were that bad, i probably wouldn't be here either. the reason why i hang around this board is because it is tame enough for me to tolerate. some internet sites are just plain nasty and filthy.

Imagine if it was not Altron that Spirit had posted about. Forget all the censoring stuff. If some people here had started to pick on another member...say...me, for example. For a thread sticking up for a poor defenseless child, I think this thread has gone on far long enough. It's a bit disappointing it never got much farther than "You said this" "No I didn't" "Yes you did *quote*" "No I didn't *quote**quote*" "Don't tell me to do stuff", but I think most everyone's got the general idea that Spirit wanted to convey.
Don't treat Altron differently because of his age, treat him differently because he's 99.9% weird ;) If he wants to play with the big kids, he'll need to learn how to use a dictionary or ask his parents when he encounters an adult word (just like everyone else did at one point). And if showing them this site makes them banish him from it, then so be it. Until that explicitly happens, I have to assume he's got parental permission (or at least parental apathy), thus I have to regard him as any other member on this board.
