View Full Version : Blu-ray vs HD-DVD
January 17, 2007 - There was no shortage of one-upmanship and taunting between the HD-DVD and Blu-ray camps last week at the annual CES convention, yet it may well be decided that the most telling drama between the formats was taking place at the same time, not in the tech-infested halls of the main convention center, but just next door at the Sands where the AVN tradeshow was going down. The AVNs are the CES and Oscars of the adult-entertainment industry, and in our mind proof that god loves geeks since the shows take place at the same time every year.

Last year, prior to either next-gen format launch, many of the largest porn production houses had anointed Blu-ray as the favorite format, reciting the general bullet-point benefits of the technology over HD-DVD, such as its inclusion in the PS3 and greater storage capacity per-layer. A year later, however, Blu-ray owners hoping to kick back with some high-def vicarious voluptuousness will find themselves empty handed, in more ways than one. There is no porn available on Blu-ray at all.
At the AVNs last week, Joone, founder of Digital Playgrounds, one of the industry's most forward thinking production houses, told German site Heise that despite both his and other outlets interest in releasing features on Blu-ray, Sony has pressured Blu-ray disc manufacturers not to produce any media for pornography, threatening revocation of licenses for failure to comply. As such the adult entertainment industry has been essentially blocked from supporting the format and as a result has turned to HD-DVD.

Unlike BETA/VHS there are players that will play both discs ,so there is no reason both shouldn't survive, albiet not prosper.
Does either format not force you to sit there and watch ads on a disc you fucking PAID FOR? That's the way I'd like to go.
Dumb move by Sony to exclude porn.

Hi-def pr0n?
I don't need to see the moles, stretch marks and stray hairs, thanks. :P
It's supposed to be fantasy... hiDef is too real to feel.
Don't you like being able to freeze the money shot in perfect clarity, though?

Looks like I may have to change my opinion (http://edition.cnn.com/2008/BUSINESS/01/04/us.warner/index.html?iref=mpstoryview)...
I'm still waiting until the players that play both formats don't cost $1,000 anymore.
In the meantime, I got an HD upconversion DVD player for $30 at Wal-Mart. Problem is, my TV has only one HDMI input (I knew that, and the DirecTV is using that) and no DVI inputs (I could have sworn it had one). So the HDMI-DVI cable sits unused and I have the upconversion player hooked in through the comonent video inputs... still looks pretty damn good.
It costs more to rent a Blu-ray or HD-DVD disc than to rent a regular DVD...wtf, I don't ever remember DVDs costing more to rent than a VHS of the same movie...

Its probably a bit inconvenient, but you could buy one of each player(blu-ray/HD-DVD) for the cost of a dual format player. With the price of the individual players falling ,thats probably a better option ,short term anyway.
How far is Nanaimo from Calgary?
I answered my own question...13 hours...

Not including the 2hour Ferry trip , taking into account the possibility of snow in the Rockies or the time it would take to explain to the wife who Nixy is and why I'm going to Calgary to see her.:eek5:
Well, I was more thinking the other way...I wanna go on a road trip somewhere...I'm definately not driving through the Rockies in the winter though and 13 hours is about 9 hours longer than I'm looking for.
You're out west darlin'. Anywhere worth going is far far away. That way home is also far far away-from THEM.

Unless you've got room to stack them, or lay them side-by-side under your flat-panel TV...but you'd also have to have the 'slim-line' type...;)
