View Full Version : Hair
OK, I have an appointment to get my hair done tomorrow afternoon...I wanna do something FAIRLY drastic. I don't wanna go above my shoulders as I like being able to pull my hair into a ponytail. Right now I just have TO MUCH hair though...I am trying to find some pics online about what I could do with it but it's tedious work and also I need someone who is gonna be 100% honest with me about whether they think it would look good (because I want something *I* am going to like that other people are not gonna think look stupid)...So, I thought..."Who do I know who has wonderful searching skills and is brutally honest?" and I thought of ya'll! So, here is a pic of me I just took so you have an idea of what you're working with...and GO! FIND ME A NEW HAIRSTYLE! :D
Oh, this is the only one I've pulled for consideration so far...I like the flippy layers...I also like angled layers...but I need something that is long enough that if I'm lazy I can ponytail...

I like this. The gradual layering of the edges will slim a more rounder face, plus it looks like it would be easy to deal with.
or this, if you like shorter.

You could leave it that length and have long layers cut in. It really makes a huge difference in the weight and versatility of your hair.
Thanks guys...I'm still on a hunt too

I like the last one. I would try to avoid short bangs if you can.

Yeah I love the LOOK for the first one on her...but, I dunno about on me and I have a feeling I'd lose my mind managing it...this is the most recent addition to the list.

I gave up bangs at like 8. They were the perennial force favorite of the grandparents when they took us to 'Shakey Pete the Barber'. I had little say in the matter.
So recently? You must have pictures.
They were just straight across thick little kid bangs, i have pics at my mom's house.

Finally! Someone who I can impart oval-face wisdom to!
You and I have the same oval/round face type. A layered haircut that naturally curves in towards your face and a little bit of height at the top makes your face look longer and thinner.
I also used to always wear my hair in a ponytail, drawn back from my face. I find it much more flattering now when I leave my hair down and it's cut properly. But my hair barely touches my shoulders when it's cut.
If you have layers, you might need little clips to keep the shorter sides back (a good reason to go to the beauty store and pick out cute clips that match your outfit) ;) If you get long layers that start past your jawline, that might not be a problem.
I wouldn't automatically rule out bangs. I have very thin bangs that do not bother me, even if they get too long, and it helps frame my face and again, make it look longer than rounder. And if you do wear a ponytail, it looks cute.
Your hair looks pretty thick so keep in mind that if you do get layers, it's going to lighten the weight. Which means hair flipping under or hair flipping out.
Good luck Nixy, and be sure to post pictures after.

Thanks Greenie! I like hair clippies so that isn't a problem for me :)
Also, I am looking forward to the lighter weight of my hair, it's ok for it to be a bit flippy, I don't mind :)
Thanks for the face shape advice! I was worried about the cut matching my face shape...it's hard to find pics of people with oval faces...Mandy Moore seems kinda close-ish though. Thanks so much again! I'll post pics tomorrow night!

What do you think of this (but longer):

Although my hair never looks that good, that's the cut I have. But my part is in the middle.
Then there's this:

This is what I mean about the difference between flipping under or flipping out.
I think I'm set on bangs now, I'm excited.
I want people to go "WHOA!" then when they recover I want them to be like "I Like it"

Get them THIN. Almost-not-there-bangs. The first cut I had with bangs, they cut them too thick and I looked like I was wearing a helmet. You can always get thicker later.
Like that first picture, you can also train them to the side if they're long enough (or if you're not adverse to hair products).

Plus your hair is dark so your bangs don't have to be thick to be noticeable. You want to be able to see peeks of forehead. :D
The place I'm going is suppose to be FANTASTIC, the lady I'm getting cut my friend's hair last week. Apparently she listens and does what you ask so I'll be sure to mention that I want thin-ish bangs, thanks :)

Do they have hair books/magazines? Maybe you could go early and then you can just show her the page and say, "I want this." That always works. :)

That doesn't look like it's layered though. Just cut down on an angle on the front. That style with long layers that start past your jawline would look pretty damn good.
I wonder if your head is going to feel lighter. ;)

Wasn't there a website that let you morph a photo of yourself to see how different hair styles would look on you?

Shit. That would be great. I have to figure out what I'm doing for the wedding. I can't really wear my hair in my face. Unfortunately.

I'm torn because all of the "wedding hair" pictures I've seen have it pulled back. My face looks like a moon when my hair is all pulled back. But there's no in-between.
I don't like that slicked back look either. Or sticky stuff. But I'm going to have to deal with a non-moving style no matter what.
What do you think of a tamer style like this?

I love ringlets hanging down like that!!
No after pics, I am unhappy...the lady did side bangs and i hates it. I am going back Monday and making her make them regulat bangs like in the pic.
Did you wash and style it yourself afterwards? i have a woman who cuts my hair terrific but I hate the way she styles it. Maybe you might like it after you do it yourself.
Not really much styling to it...she dried it and flat ironed it...I've combed it and I hate the long bangs...always sliding back into my eyes...the salon is closed til monday but first thing monday morning i'm gonna be there having these hidious things cut into this:
http://static.flickr.com/14/18396671_ade7f93f24_m.jpg
or not..I just pulled my hair up so I can stop thinking about it and look how fucking far back my head these bangs are cut!
That's not so far back really...but they do look awfully long. I can understand, I don't like to see my hair. It has to not interfere with my vision.

I'm sorry Nixy, I don't know why they do that. I had the same thing happen to me the first time, and I made sure to tell them the next time what not to do.
What about parting your hair so the "back" bangs fall to the side instead of the front in the meantime? I don't know how to explain it really.
Did she give you long layers at the bottom and taper the front down? Are you happy with everything else except the bangs?

It's shorter than I thought you were going to go, were you planning on that or did it just happen? Also, I didn't realize the bangs were so long. How short do you want them? Mine just about touch my eyebrows when they're dry.
I'm happy with the length, I wasn't planning to go so short but glad I did...it's a lit lighter. I hate the bangs, I wanted regular front bangs...that I could have hang traight down to about my eyebrows

That's good then, she can just cut them to the length you want. And the shorter, the lighter, so they'll have a little curve to them too.
The length is great. I'll bet turning your head was funny at first because of how light your hair is. The first time I had about a foot of hair cut off, I kept trying to flip my hair over my shoulder like I used to but there was nothing to flip. :)
Haven't been flipping, everything is tied back and pinned up now so I don't have to THINK about my bangs.
I want this http://www.cinemamontreal.com/images/people-559-mandymoore.jpg
But, she cut the bangs that are there funny...it seems like they start to far back my head...I dunno...

Takes a while to get used to having hair in your face - I went from long hair, and tying it back all the time, to getting a layered fringe which started from brow length, and swept down into longer bangs that framed my face. You do get used to it, but wearing glasses doesn't help at ALL.
My hair has been cut really short now, I should post an updated pic up sometime - it's cut to sit just above my shoulders, but my bangs sit just below my glasses now, so they're a lot easier to manage.
I'm sorry you had such a disappointing haircut; unfortunately they never quite turn out how you want them to. I had mine cut a couple of weeks ago, and didn't like how it sat (was *just* sitting on my shoulders), so I got it re-cut a week ago, and whilst it still wasn't what I was exactly after, it was better than the first cut.
I managed to get the damn un-bangs pinned under my other hair so you can't really tell they're there...my options are to let them grow out or to get them cut into actual bangs...I plan to get them cut so that they're like the pic I posted up there somewhere...but, for now, with the un-bangs hidden and some styling product in...
The bangs are suppose to fall to the side...but I hate it...and I think it's cut to far back to have them fall to the front...I'm already crying my eyes out so i may aswell post the pic...
what's wrong with the look in the pics you posted in the post I quoted? I'd say "I'd do ya" but we're in public and a couple people might get mad... in any case, I like the look at least.

The bangs like that irk me
But I like the look... doesn't that count for something? :mope:
Put on a nicer shirt and took some more pics...no clips or anything in now...maybe I'll leave it as is...maybe I wasn't meant to have bangs and I'll just be patient and wait for the short bits that were suppose to be bangs to grow a bit.
Yeah I know...I am making this a WAY bigger deal than it need be...but whatcha gonna do?

This is the 2nd haircut - the first one was too long and had this awkward kink in it (sat just above my shoulders). Wasn't quite what I was after, but I'm happy enough with it.
How are you feeling about your haircut now? Still depressed?

Hey BOP, the "bangs" still irk me...I am undecided if I wanna deal with them til they grow a bit (not wear them as bangs) and scrape the whole bangs thing or if I wanna go back and get regular bangs...my roomie will be home tomorrow, I'm gonna ask for her advice. It's so hard to tell just through pictures.

Yeah but until i got home and combed my hair I didn't realize how retarded the bansg were cut, pretty much unless I'm wearing it in a side part (and spending a lot of time blowdrying) it's just a piece of hair that hangs in my face.

Have you washed it and styled it yourself? Often when you first get a cut, it does look a bit silly cos they iron it flat, but once you've washed it yourself, and it's got a bit more body, they look a lot better.
I think the cut looks great on you! It really suits you!
Thanks - I wasn't really after a 'bob' look, I wanted it cut a bit more shaggier, and the way it's cut now, means I can't do a messier style.
Yeah I've washed and styled it...I need to get a flat iron because otherwise at this length is just poofs, there's no weight to hold it down. I still hates the "bangs" they just sit there and I can't make them look good no matter what I do.

Your hair has had that weight on it for how long? It'll settle in a few days. Until then, there's no point in going on and on about it. Nor cutting it any shorter until you see how it looks once the rest relaxes and gets used to not having the ends.

My hair was at my chin less than 2 years ago...so really it hasn't been extremely long for a long period of time. The main part of my hair I have NO issue with, my hair ALWAYS poofs when it's this length though, in the past I've had it this length fairly constantly for a year or so...before I didn't care, now I do and want to iron it. As for the bangs, I wanted bangs to begin with...I'm not going til Wednesday though, I want my roommate's suggestions about what to do with them first.
So, I made it through the hell that was that hair cut and today I took a huge leap of faith. A friend of mine is apprenticing under a guy who owns a salon, another friend of ours had her hair cut by our apprentice friend (and then "finished off" by the owner) and she was RAVING about how this guy (the owner) is so good at cutting hair to look good with ones face and also listening to what they want. The apprentice friend has also raved to me about how awesome his boss is. So, today I went in to have my hair cut. Instructed him that for work I must beable to pull my hair back into a ponytail and that I enjoy it being long. He actually took the front pieces of my hair and MEASURED how long they'd need to stay inorder to be pulled back...he then ASKED me if it was ok if the very front just tucked behind my ears (and I said yes)...noone has ever ASKED me that before, they just do it anyway. He then played with my hair for a bit and said "OK I know what we're going to do". I didn't even ask, I just got my hair washed and let him cut...well, the outcome is FANTASTIC!
LOOK!
THANKS :D
I'm getting better at being un-conceided about it, when Inky told me it looks good I said "I KNOW!" haha :D
