Prior to the 9th century CE, There was a widespread popular belief that evil Witches existed. They were seen as evil persons, primarily women, who devoted their lives to harming and killing others through black magic and evil sorcery. The Catholic church at the time officially taught that such Witches did not exist. It was a heresy to say that they were real.
1326: The Church authorized the Inquisition to investigate Witchcraft and to develop "demonology," the theory of the diabolic origin of Witchcraft. 1
bullet
1330: The popular concept of Witches as evil sorcerers is expanded to include belief that they swore allegiance to Satan, had sexual relations with the Devil, kidnapped and ate children, etc.
bullet
1347 to 1349: The Black Death epidemic killed a sizeable part of the European population. Conspiracy theories spread. Lepers, Jews, Muslims and Witches were accused of poisoning wells and spreading disease.
1430's: Christian theologians started to write articles and books which "proved" the existence of Witches. 2
bullet
1450: The first major witch-hunts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witchhunt) began in many western European countries. The Roman Catholic Church created an imaginary evil religion, using stereotypes that had circulated since pre-Christian times. They said that Pagans who worshiped Diana and other Gods and Goddesses were evil Witches who kidnapped babies, killed and ate their victims, sold their soul to Satan, were in league with demons, flew through the air, met in the middle of the night, caused male impotence and infertility, caused male genitals to disappear, etc. Historians have speculated that this religiously inspired genocide was motivated by a desire by the Church to attain a complete religious monopoly, or was
"a tool of repression, a form of reining-in deviant behavior, a backlash against women, or a tool of the common people to name scapegoats for spoiled crops, dead livestock or the death of babies and children."
Walter Stephens, a professor of Italian studies at Johns Hopkins University, proposes a new theory: "I think Witches were a scapegoat for God." 3
Religious leaders felt that they had to retain the concepts of both an omnipotent and an all-loving deity. Thus, they had to invent Witches and demons in order to explain the existence of evil in the world. This debate, about how an all-good and all-powerful God can coexist in the world with evil is now called Theodicy. Debate continues to the present day.
1692: We all know about Salem.
1953: Arthur Miller writes 'The Crucible' "which used the witch trials of Salem, Massachusetts in 1692 as an allegory for McCarthyism and the Red Scare, which occurred in the United States in the 1950s. Miller was himself questioned by the House Committee on Un-American Activities in 1956.
sayeth the Witch-hunter (http://www.catholic-forum.com/saints/pope0213a.htm) : "It has recently come to our ears ... that in some parts of upper OTCENTRAL, as RW, Lunatic lounge, Entertainment ... persons of both sexes, ... forsaking the faith... give themselves over to devils male and female, and by their incantations, charms, and conjurings, and by other abominable superstitions and sortileges... ruin and cause to perish the offspring of women, the foal of animals, the products of the earth... as well as men and women, cattle and flocks and herds... vineyards also and orchards... that they afflict and torture with dire pains and anguish, both internal and external, these men, women, cattle, flocks, herds, and animals, and hinder men from begetting and women from conceiving, and prevent all consummation of marriage; that, moreover, they deny... the faith they received in holy baptism... and perpetrate many other abominable offences and crimes... to the pernicious example and scandal of multitudes."

Pie Iesu domine...
CROWD:
A witch! A witch! A witch! A witch! We've found a witch! A witch! A witch! A witch! A witch! We've got a witch! A witch! A witch! Burn her! Burn her! Burn her! We've found a witch! We've found a witch! A witch! A witch! A witch!
VILLAGER #1:
We have found a witch. May we burn her?
CROWD:
Burn her! Burn! Burn her! Burn her!
BEDEVERE:
How do you know she is a witch?
VILLAGER #2:
She looks like one.
CROWD:
Right! Yeah! Yeah!
BEDEVERE:
Bring her forward.
WITCH:
I'm not a witch. I'm not a witch.
BEDEVERE:
Uh, but you are dressed as one.
WITCH:
They dressed me up like this.
CROWD:
Augh, we didn't! We didn't...
WITCH:
And this isn't my nose. It's a false one.
BEDEVERE:
Well?
VILLAGER #1:
Well, we did do the nose.
[PICTURE]
BEDEVERE:
The nose?
VILLAGER #1:
And the hat, but she is a witch!
VILLAGER #2:
Yeah!
CROWD:
We burn her! Right! Yeaaah! Yeaah!
BEDEVERE:
Did you dress her up like this?
VILLAGER #1:
No!
VILLAGER #2 and 3:
No. No.
VILLAGER #2:
No.
VILLAGER #1:
No.
VILLAGERS #2 and #3:
No.
VILLAGER #1:
Yes.
VILLAGER #2:
Yes.
VILLAGER #1:
Yes. Yeah, a bit.

VILLAGER #1:
She has got a wart.

BEDEVERE:
What makes you think she is a witch?

VILLAGER #3:
Well, she turned me into a newt.
BEDEVERE:
A newt?
VILLAGER #3:
I got better.
VILLAGER #2:
Burn her anyway!
VILLAGER #1:
Burn!
CROWD:
Burn her! Burn! Burn her!...
BEDEVERE:
Quiet! Quiet! Quiet! Quiet! There are ways of telling whether she is a witch.
VILLAGER #1:
Are there?
[PICTURE]
VILLAGER #2:
Ah?
VILLAGER #1:
What are they?
CROWD:
Tell us! Tell us!...
VILLAGER #2:
Do they hurt?
BEDEVERE:
Tell me. What do you do with witches?
VILLAGER #2:
Burn!
VILLAGER #1:
Burn!
CROWD:
Burn! Burn them up! Burn!...
BEDEVERE:
And what do you burn apart from witches?
VILLAGER #1:
More witches!
VILLAGER #3:
Shh!
VILLAGER #2:
Wood!
BEDEVERE:
So, why do witches burn?
[pause]
VILLAGER #3:
B--... 'cause they're made of... wood?
BEDEVERE:
Good! Heh heh.
CROWD:
Oh, yeah. Oh.
BEDEVERE:
So, how do we tell whether she is made of wood?
VILLAGER #1:
Build a bridge out of her.
BEDEVERE:
Ah, but can you not also make bridges out of stone?
VILLAGER #1:
Oh, yeah.
RANDOM:
Oh, yeah. True. Uhh...
BEDEVERE:
Does wood sink in water?
VILLAGER #1:
No. No.
VILLAGER #2:
No, it floats! It floats!
VILLAGER #1:
Throw her into the pond!
CROWD:
The pond! Throw her into the pond!
BEDEVERE:
What also floats in water?
VILLAGER #1:
Bread!
VILLAGER #2:
Apples!

VILLAGER #3:
Uh, churches! Churches!
VILLAGER #2:

BEDEVERE:
Exactly. So, logically...
VILLAGER #1:
If... she... weighs... the same as a duck,... she's made of wood.
BEDEVERE:
And therefore?
VILLAGER #2:
A witch!
VILLAGER #1:
A witch!
CROWD:
A witch! A witch!...
VILLAGER #4:
Here is a duck. Use this duck.
[quack quack quack]
BEDEVERE:
Very good. We shall use my largest scales.
CROWD:
Ohh! Ohh! Burn the witch! Burn the witch! Burn her! Burn her! Burn her! Burn her! Burn her! Burn her! Burn her! Ahh! Ahh...
BEDEVERE:
Right. Remove the supports!

CROWD:
A witch! A witch! A witch!
WITCH:
It's a fair cop.
VILLAGER #3:

I take it that you are feeling persecuted? singled out? beset upon? accused of magics and being against the status quo strictly because it suits our neanderthal 'never rock the boat' mentality? Don't flatter yourself.
There is no lynch mob here. It is strictly a construct of your own baffling rudness... a reaction to your action. Do you think that I see eye to eye half the time with Sam? with Gonz? RM? Winky? Leslie? CHCR? Anyone here? The players in place here are fairly polar opposite camps and go at each other all of the time. They have disagreed and argued and baited one another for years without resorting to the disconnect rabidity you have. You have managed to do the impossible. You have managed to unite the bitterest of opponents into a wall against you. No camp will claim you. You have deliberately sought to distance yourself from the herd as a free thinker of sorts and then constantly complained about how lonely you are once you achieved it. Either embrace the path you have chosen or abandon it. Just stop whining about it. You cannot claim martyr status. It has to be granted you.
See this? It's me playing the world's smallest violin for you.

I have to say, this is one of the more fantstic "I'm taking my ball and going home" threads I have ever seen.
Quit playing the victim, that's a lousy role to pull-upon yourself and it's no way to go thru life.
While witches have become famous for the occasional period of persicution. The persicuted victim of the ages has always been the village idiot.
Fortunatly, you are neither a witch or an idiot. You're just ornery-stubborn like a dagnabbit mule that won't budge without dynamite.
UncleHogarth's right; the "real world" it can be tough, not for the faint-of-heart or the weak-of-mind. It clearly says so under the titile.

Sweet-pea,
If your gonna post something expect to be held responsible for it. It'll usually get scrutinized, you need to be able to show the validity of it to some degree. At least you have to be able to consider that there is merrit in the opposition when undeniable facts are presented.
I can only speak for myself; I hope you choose to stay, participate, learn as well as teach. Theres lots of knowledge and insight to be gained in these threads, there is no gain in being a quitter. I was sure you were the intelligent modern woman (read: strength), less the cut and run ...maybe I was wrong
Give it a day, take a break, come back ready to play.
....whose yerr buddy? :winkkiss:

Unc and RM, you are the statemen with words of eloquence. I cannot say it any better than you have.
TG as you have found out here and I'm sure in real life To get respect you have to earn it. Nothing is given freely, It has to be earned. After reading All of your post and watching you circle the points and change subjects when you could no longer adequately defend your own thoughts. I cannot feel sympathy for you. You brought it on youself.
You came in like a bull in a china shop. And now you want us to feel sorry for you?
You will get no where in life with the attitude you project. You MUST be willing to look at all sides of a situation, and come to a solution(which you say dont exist). Instead your path was if i cant be right neither can anyone else.
I sincerly hope this isnt a trait you have in real life, or all will be for naught.

Humans, by nature, work and live in groups and have criteria for acceptance and rejection. It's a mechanism for justice, and a way to enforce standards of behavior in group members. The threat of rejection is the enforcement muscle.

I call shenanigans. This is a crock. A feeble attempt to worm out of a situation by anyone's standards.
Having said that. This is either a serious thread, or it's a trolling maneuver. I believe it's the former, and you're just too embarassed to admit it. If it is in fact the former, fine. But take responsibility for what you post when you post it. Backing out later only makes you incredible and it'll be difficult for anyone to take you seriously. If it's the latter, I'm not putting up with people's shit anymore. Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out, and take extra care, cause it'll be aiming that way.

DO you really think i'd be embarrased about anything? I were the slightest bit embarassed, I wouldn't even bother posting anything...because I'm ridiculed before I even have anything to write. All I do is make comments and watch you react, I am the statement... its just too easy.
Anybody astute enough to note that reference to Monty Python (one of the most fantastic satiristic stints of all time) would see my slant quite clearly, and thats basically what I got my idea from, that and the crucible, because, judging by most peoples attitudes around here - being outspoken about something that not everyone agrees on generally arouses a sort of character assasination, simply a means to wipe out the weakest link; and with the analogy to the historical example of witchcraft, for various reasons, its been going on for a very long time. It just now so happens that so many people are wrapped in a pseudo-paranoia, a sense of hysteria and moral panic - resulting in more dangerous intolerance than ever.
I meant and continue to stand by everything here because I think it is a fine example of exactly the way the minority, the "other" in any group is treated. And I think, particularly in the American mentality; there is a particular tendancy to attack anyone not consistent with your ideals; liberals are branded as anti americans the way people were once hunted down and ostracised as being communists or having communist sympathies during the cold war. Of course, everything tends to be blown way out of proportion here, I think thats a perfect reflection of everyday life as it is constructed in the eyes of those that choose to live for the illusions that are fabricated by those structures, institutions around you.
I tend to think you all need to wake up and realise that, confronted with the voices of the upcoming generation - you need to listen rather than ridicule. Because at the ignorance you display and the constant attitude is not doing anything but cause a greater desire to resist and challenge the dominant forms of discourse, the ones that you adhere to.
But of course, nobody here cares to make any sense of anything I say... I don't mean any harm, I'm harmless - just extreme, provokative, sarcastic and loud. Sorry for disturbing the peace  its so otherwise boring in here - you should be thanking me for giving you something to talk about, and you can hardly say you haven't paid any attention to me - regardless of what I have to say, how I say it; and wether or not you agree with it or make any sense of it.
just accept that I am who I am, that I need to make some noise: trying to tame me and mock me and insult me all the time isn't doing you, or me any favours, And thats not saying that I don't want you to disagree with me : I expect the conflict but I at least deserve constructive debate rather than hate. And if you interpret me as hateful in the first place, perhaps you should get to know me rather than box me for a change, because I couldn't be anything but. I just happen to be highly cynical some would see it as a major flaw : I see it as an opportunity ;)
So you're back to having a point to what you've posted again, huh?

Its not up to us to pick sense out of what you say. It is up to you to project a cogent idea to your audience. If you are being inconsistent, angry, venomous, and then saying 'ha, ha, fooled you' '...maybe it is, maybe it wasn't.'

Nice try, but I was a fan of Monty Python before you were born. In fact, they broke up before you were born. Your attempts at scarcasm are insipid and weak. In fact, they ramble aimlessly, with no sign of coherence, and absolutely no wittiness to them at all. Nope. I'm afraid this has been too dry even for the Python gang. Sorry. Move along. Nothing to see here, citizens.
I meant and continue to stand by everything here because I think it is a fine example of exactly the way the minority, the "other" in any group is treated. This is, by far, the funniest thing you've ever said. How you can assume that your plight of a few months is equal to the plight that minorities have suffered for at least 400 years is appalling. It's also a trick used by everybody who does something ghastly. If it's not their personal freedom, then it's because they are oppressed. Please...give it a rest. Now you've even got me bored with you.
Ahhh...Teen-aged angst, now, is it? Poor me. The reason you are ridiculed is because you accuse everybody else of being ignorant. Question...If everybody is ignorant except you, then are you correct in your assessment of the situation? I'm actually for change, but it's your methods that destroy your arguments.
But of course, nobody here cares to make any sense of anything I say... I don't mean any harm, I'm harmless - just extreme, provokative, sarcastic and loud. I finally put the puzzle together. She isnt a philosopher, conspiracy theorist, a liberal, or even a cynical as she said. She is wanting for attention nothing more or less.
And acting like the above gets her that.
" being outspoken about something that not everyone agrees on generally arouses a sort of character assasination, simply a means to wipe out the weakest link"
This has never been the case here, study your history brfore making ASSumptions on something you have very little knowledge of.
We ONLY expect you to do your part in a conversation, Provide reasonable and coherent example of which you comment on and to provide links to the source so all can read and supply answers back.
Otherwise the way YOU project yourself, you make yourself the "weakest link"

I don't find you obnoxious at all. :)
As for satisfaction, it might help if you occasionally untied your fiancée from the bed. :p
Well said Sam. That is what struck me. The RW has been & will continue to be a place to exhibit personal political beliefs. Just because you exhibit them does not mean anybody else is forced to agree with them. In fact, it's more fun when agreement is the exception as oposed to the rule. If we all agreed, it would be boring.
Unfortunately, as has proven to be the case too many times, the liberal comes in, states a case, has no facts to back it up & ends up running away. You can't even state your case. You state somebody elses without crediting the original source. Bad girl. There are more liberals at OTC than conservatives. Even they find you obnoxious. Ironic, huh?
you all need to wake up and realise that, confronted with the voices of the upcoming generation - you need to listen rather than ridicule
Now that, my dear, is funny. The upcoming generation is leaning way way to the right. The pendulum has hit it's left apex & begun to return to a more sensible position. Another generation & it will hit its right apex. These things are cyclical. When you grow up (and hopefully wiser) you'll see this. You'll also see that EVERY generation, and I do mean EVERY, has thought themselves smarter & more compassionate than all the previous. You'd do well to listen to those who have time & experience. Books don't make you smart. They lead you to a path. On that path is where knowledge & life happen.

Well I say everyone has a different approach. Even if its unoriginal or easily attacked in packs. I dont think the witch analogy is the proper one for her really. But perhaps more the annoying new kid who gets beat up by the established bullies for being loud and annoying (granted) and new. And even the more soft spoken more decent smaller kids take their opportunity to get a punch in in all the fury. I actually found that a little more disturbing. Seeing the "quiet good" kids going after her too. In fact Im shocked to say that Research Monkey has had the most useful post in this thread in that he took her to the wood shed but at the same time encouraged her despite her politics. Slug away if you must but dont try to kill her for the sake of being mean. surely you dont feel threatened after all...
Blood is in the water. Resist the temptation. phase the playground beating into proper hazing that can then lead to proper acceptance. everyone has useful talents. even if shes still working on putting together the proper standard debate tactics its clear she has tenacity. its clear she has endurance. its clear she has a burning passion in the things she believes. even if shes still forming these believes. is that such a crime? seems to she has some natural talent. Let it foment and develop. Dont beat it out of her now cause shes an easy target.
If you are truly disgusted by her then one or two good thrashings by the "top dogs" should have sufficed then you should have naturally shrugged and lost interest. So why the need to shoot her in the head every time she moves? Gosh this is beginning to remind me of the reaction to another young loud mouth a while back in another thread I cant begin to recall now... we all seek attention one way or another.
By the way has this ever happened to a loud mouth uncouth conservative kid thats come stumbling in here castigating the liberals only to be turned on by a pack of em? Just wondering if theres been an equal and opposite situation here before. I cant imagine it really.
Jeslek was OTCs first casualty. He was conservative (and young & naive)
Yep yep, Jeslek was definitely a polar opposite of Tank Girl, conservative to the point it made conservatives look bad. And an uninformed asshole to boot. It's not the political leanings thats getting her a hard way to go, it's more the "I have a stand!, no wait, I didn't really mean that, you just read into it what you wanted."

Jeslek also came instantly to mind. He was about 2 notches to the right of Atilla the Hun and as smug as a bug in a rug.
Thulsa with everyone ive talked to, they all want her to stay. And at the end of the day the so called beatings get boring. All anyone really wants is for the basic rules of the RW to be followed and if your gonna make a stand to have the backbone to stick with it and prove your point. nothing more or less. and as the last 3 post indicate sides make no difference.

I think this thread has broken winksters heart, he hasn't been back since he read her post.
I will say, among her many other traits, she has some vim-n-vigor that is admirable.
I hope she returns with her own views and maybe some slight tactical changes in her style. TG v2.0
I think Gato said it best somewhere:
You make a choice in your life and, as long as it doesn't adversely affect me, I have to respect that choice. I do not, however, have to like your choice, nor do I have to sit and listen to you because of your choice. That's where most rights advocates get lost. It isn't my duty to like your lifestyle choice, even if it does not interfere in mine.
Quit doing the oppressed liberal thing. I'm your age, I'm liberal but around here I am in no way oppressed. Get over it and grow the hell up.

grow up? GROW UP?! How terribily conservative of you... you... you Cromwellian.
Cromwellian? You sir are infringing my civil rights in some way! I shall now write a strongly worded letter of disappoinment to my member of parliament! ;)
