Or put more reasonably , whats the possession that you have had the longest?
I have a pot plant , an asparagus fern of sorts , that Ive had since I moved into my first flat age 18 [ counts on fingers ]....... 14 years ago
But the other day I played chess with a friend on a chessboard that was given to me either as an xmas or birthday present when I was 9 .
Incidentally the dog chewed one of the very styley white knights and that glue holding it together is probably the second oldest thing I own !
I'm pretty sure the dresser in my bedroom now was also in my room when I was born. I've also got a bookshelf that dates back to 1988 or so. My MC Hammer tape dates back to 1990, and I've still got that.

I'll have to look about and think about it. The oldest thing I can think of offhand is this toolbox I made in shop back in grade 6. That would make it 23 years in my posession. I might have a few scraps of 1st edition D&D that go back a few years longer.
i have several items from my childhood but they weren't in my possession since then....um...i guess i have to say my first ex husband's father's citadel blanket. i've had that since i was 19.
lets see..i've got a bunch of comic books i bought in the 80's. still have a few paperback books from high school (late 70's). about 30 LP's from the same time frames.
the bedroom set is about 20 years old, but that was hers before we met so i dont think that counts.
Yamaha FG-160E acoustic/electric guitar. Bought new in 1974.
Shure Vocal Master PA. Bought used at the same time.
A kid's got to have priorities. ;)

I guess the oldest thing I own would be some quilts my grandmother made in the 1940s.
The item longest in my possession would either be my original copy of the debut LP by KISS, or some Hot Wheels cars. I've had both since at least 1974.

probably some CDs or video cassettes
The oldest thing I own is probably a doll that my grandfather gave my grandmother before I was born and she gave to me when I was a couple years old.
The thing that has been in my posession the longest is a baby blanket I had when I was born and it is still here in my room now. So, it's almost 21 years old.
OK, wrong, the oldest thing I own I was given 2 years ago. it is a necklace that belonged to my great great grandmother. I was named after her :)

The thing that I've owned the longest and still own is a stuffed toy named "little blue dog" - I ownded it about 2 days before I was born (April 1968), when my aunt gave it to me while I was waiting to be born. I still have it , although its seen better days.
The oldest thing that I currently own. There are a few... I've got bayonets dating to WWI and WWII, a couple of coins going back to 1880, a pre-WWI Champ lighter...predates Zippo.
I collect coins. Got a couple from the 1850's.

The oldest single item is a 3 drawer chest that came to Texas in 1850 with my many-times great grandmother.
My possession that I've had the longest is a single hand-painted cell from the MerrieMelodies cartoon called "The Night Watchman". Signed by Leon Schlesinger. Circa early 40s.
Off the top of my head, I have the China my dad sent my grandmother in the 40s or 50s, stamped "Made in Occupied Japan"...well then I also have some of his slides form his years there.
An old Dante's Divine Comedy book (from the 1800s), illustrated and written in italian and spanish (half and half page).

OK, it seems I stand corrected. I just bit into a Snickers bar that HAD to have been made in the early 1920s... :barfonu:

I have a stuffed lamb that was given to me when I was about 1 year old or so. He is safe in a box right now.
We were discussing this at my sister in laws b-day party last night. Erik still owns a fleece penguin balnket that he has had since he was 6 or 7. He still sleeps with it every night.
I'd have to say the dresser in my bedroom. My grandfather made it back in the late 40's. It's nothing special, just a pine shaker style dresser, but I refinished it just last year and I'm sure it will last for years to come yet.
The oldest thing I own that has only been mine would be some cards I got for my 11th birthday. Our house burned down when I was 10 and we lost everything from before then, so I guess I went a little nuts saving stuff for a couple years.

My oldest possession is a metal ball fired at Gettysburg. You know the ones they pluck off the battlefield and sell to you mucho cheap? If it's authentic, it's that.
If that doesn't count, I have a book about the war dating to 1935, and my bed, Dresser, and vanity date back to 1940.
I'm not old enough to have owned anything for a long time, really...but I have had this necklace my grandfather gave me before he died in 1993.
I just remembered... my great-grandmother gave me a King James Bible with my name embossed on the cover when I was born. That would have to be my oldest possession, since I can't remember whether my parents had my dresser for a while before I got it or not.
I do have the Flag that was presented
to my fathers mother after my uncle
augured in flying a P-47 Thunderbolt in France in 44...

The posession I've had for the longest time is probably the teddy bear I was goven as a present when I was born... its 24 years old.
The oldest item in my posession... probably the my mother's long faux pearl and silver necklace... must be about 30 years old... they're now back in fashion!
I have my mother-in-laws baby shoes, my moms wedding gown, and of mine, I have some Avon lip glosses shapped like a pair of lips and a hamberger.

I wish I could date some of the antiques that my dad has passed onto me. This corner cupboard that I have is supposedly 200+ years old. He hasn't surrendered the best pieces yet. (venetian and japanese glass) I will probably have to use a prybar to get them from his fingers after he releases his mortal coil.

I keep remembering things
A book published immediately after the sinking of the Titantic detailing what was known.
Also a book published soon after the 1900 Galveston hurricane that killed 6000+ detailing that disaster.

The oldest thing in my posession would be the watch my grand mother wore when she first came to Canada in the late 40's. My oldest posession would be my teddy bear that I've had since I was born, so that's almost 30 years old.

My grandfathers pocket watch, given to him when he was about 16...still works. If my math serves corretly...that'd be about 1930's.
PT - isn't it the best feeling in the world when you can refinish a piece of furniture and give it new life? I've got my grandfathers dresser at home..it's in my son's room now. I had to take off 4 layers of paint to get to the detailing and work out the intricate detailing with a dentists' pick, but it's absolutely beautiful.
They don't have this kind of workmanship anymore :(

They don't have this kind of workmanship anymore :( Towards the end of my grandmothers life she seemed to become obsessed with painting EVERYTHING!!! The dresser is just the first that I tackled, I'm currently working on a pair of end tables that I'm almost to the point of giving up on. I don't think anyone in the family made these, but they're nice oak end tables.

I don't use it because I have no clue how to or want to, but I own a fourth generation Singer sewing machine. It's one of the original kind that stowed down into the desk itself and it foot pump operated. I've been told it's worth a lot of dough since it still has the original seat that came with it along with all the manuals and stuff. Even the original can of oil for it. I'll never sell it though because it was my grandmothers, mothers.

The OLDEST thing I own? Some Roman coins from around 2000 years ago. Then I have a locket from my great-great-grandmother, and a tea-set from my great-grandmother.
Stuff I've kept? I'm not a hoarder... so nothing from my childhood or anything.

What're you using? I've got this liquid that just makes the paint bubble off...lovely stuff though you don't want to touch it with skin lemme tell you! itches to beat all!
the oldest thing i have is a box carved from an oak beam from a 17th century farm house.
the oldest thing I have would have to be my Winnie-the-Pooh stuffed bear. It only has one ear, the hint of eyebrows, and very obvious open-heart surgery stitches. I've had it since my very first Christmas back in 1968 - He turns 36 this month.
Other than that, I have my Classical Nylon Acoustic guitar that my dad bought me when I was 9. Can't really think of anything else other than the pearls my mom gave me when I was 16, that her mom gave her on her 16th birthday. I recently gave my niece a single pearl that belonged to my grandmother, for whom she is named.

It is entitled

Hmm ...
I have my grandmother's 'ukulele ... but I don't know how old it is.
I have my teddy bear that my aunty gave me as a child, almost 2 decades ago, that my daughter thinks is hers, but it's really mine.
I have an old photo album that my grammy gave me of my dad guys growing up.
I have this "LIFE" magazine from around 1932, it's cool looking at all the advertisements for things like bread and soup.
one day i shall have my great great grandmother's engagement ring...but now i won't take it because i'm too afraid i'd sell it.

Fossil? I have a primordial ooze paperweight of a fossil around here somewhere.
Hmm... I have a couple of trilobyte fossil.
And a 486 with Windows 3.1 on it, there's a fossil for ya.
Trilobyte fossil? ;o
I wonder how much you can sell that for.
If I tell you where the creek is, you can get one yourself.
There's a lot there? Hm, I really never knew they were all too common. </science lesson>

Well, there were when I was a kid.
Recently aquired some family photos that are a little over 100 years old. I have a big oval portrait of my Great Great Grandfather on my Mom's side. It was originally in a frame with bubble glass. My Aunt gave it to me just a couple of weeks before my Uncle passed away. I had it reframed in a beautiful frame with bubble glass. I showed it to my Aunt and she just balled her eyes out.....she said my Uncle would be so proud that I had it reframed.
I also have a matched pair of Royal Daulton vases my Granny gave me. Not sure how old they are or how much they're worth. I also used to have a pretty extensive coin collection. I think the oldest coin I had was a 1840 dime....had to sell the whole collection a few years ago when hard times hit.
BOP, you collect coins? I would love to have some of those Roman coins :nerd:

they weren't fossils yet :elaugh1:

After a cursory glance about the humble abode, I realized I missed something on both fronts.
I have the little red rocking chair and a yellow cane-bottom chair I received on my third Christmas, making them items in my possession since circa 1969.
Also, I have my grandmother's old wash stand with mirror, pitcher and bowl. It supposedly was second hand when she got it, and she owned it in the 1940s, so best estimate is 1915 to 1920 era. The stand is home made, and the bowl and pitcher do not have dates stamped in them.

I've still got the original Banana suit the Army used to issue G.I.'s for a PT uniform. I told my wife to ask here drill sergeant what one was. He told that was way before his time.
