Elizabeth Taylor was the first woman to do so. I think it was for that horrid Cleopatra flick.

I get conflicting info from all over. The first male apparently was Claude Rains and the first fem is reputedly to have been Mae West.... which would have been well before Taylor.

Hmm... Cleopatra was in the 60s, I think... but Claude Rains had his heyday in the 40s... and Mae West even earlier... and both of them supposedly made 1 mil a flick. I guess it must've been a composite of back end residuals totaling 1 mil for the earlier works and Taylor got 1 mil outright up front for her work before any back end change.
