Whats wrong with the French government??? (http://www.guardian.co.uk/france/story/0,11882,1129288,00.html)

Has it gone completely moronic.

Officials, however, say the government is "very nervous" about making exceptions.
The education minister, Luc Ferry, has even suggested that Sikhs may wear "invisible" turbans, or hair nets.

Somebody please fire this idiot.

I'm missing what you may be after IC.

If I were French,

sorry, if I were French... :rofl3:

If I were advisiong the French, there, that's better...

If I were advising the French, I'd advise them to wave cheerily as the Sihks left. Coming to our country & transposing it into your old country seems really stupid. Stay where you were. Now, if we could only get the Mexicans to understand ths.

would this be all the Mexicans or just the illegals?

Gonz

3rd choice-the Mexicans who move to the US & want to live likle they're in Mexico.

They aren't the only group, just the biggest.

They aren't the only group, just the biggest.Nope, just the group that pisses you off the most. The largest hispanic group is the group that has lived in the southwest for hundreds of years. Americans, not Mexicans. Note that a lot of the Mexicans around here that everyone complains about are from Guatemala and Honduras. Billy Bob and his kinfolk can't figger out why they say they ain't Mexicans.

No, I'm talking about the Mexican immigrants. Specifically. They used to live in my neighborhood in Phoenix. They overtook my neighborhood in LA. They are part of my neighborhood in FW.

I know the difference between Mexican & Honduran or Nicaraguan or...

They've overtaken the entire Central Valley in California, too.

Are you dellusional or just refuse to read?

There are only 5,000 of them. When was the last time you read about Sikhs significantly influencing the French Culture? They aren't trying to change anything, they are only fighting for their right to keep their dignity and self-respect. Sikhs are proud people and asking them to part with one of their most pertinent part of their religion just because the French government finds it a suspicious is ludacris.

That is like the French asking you to stop being American on the account that your Americanness worries them and puts them at unease in some ways. To have an "Invisible" American heart......sounds deranged doesn't it?

If anybody goes anywhere, they must follow the rules. If the rules are no turbans, then, well, it's no turbans.

..and you call yourself an American???

Following rules is prudent to a certain degree. So is it even fine to follow rules when your pride and dignity is on the line?....Are rules that important to you or can you just pass that judgement because you do not see yourself in such a situation any time soon?...because you have no idea how the Sikh culture works?

Pride & dignity?
Are they being forced at gunpoint to stay, sans turbans? Choice my friend. Come to America, speak English. Go to France, take off the turban, go to New Zealand, fuck sheep.

As usual I give up and recede to your view point because I simply lack the strength or the interest for an argument.

P.S...I disagree

they arent being forced to no but they are being asked to not follow a tradition. I think ti is also a part of their beliefs. If they do leave they would have a hard time getting a place to live unless they have the money wouldnt they?

Gonz
1/24/04, 10:52pm
Whose tradition? The French?

freako104

But Gonz, it is not a tradition, it's a newly enacted law by the PC crowd, pure and simple. The government alone can judge what is or is not a "conspicous" display. I wouldn't have pegged you as anti-freedom of expression. Oh, and they're Sikhs.

Gonz
1/25/04, 05:53pm
How can that law be enacted by the PC crowd? It's not PC to disallow something personal.

So, then, if foreigners don't want to be fingerprinted upon arrival at Dulles because the PC crowd just enacted it, we should allow them free passage?

It's the law. When it's overturned, it's no longer the law. It's not for me to deride.

Stop being obtuse, you know what I meant.

a planned ban on religious symbols in state institutions

Moi? The hater of all things French. Being obtuse for defending their right to run their country as they see fit?

Ok, I just don't get this whole liberal thing. Can you point out how I can be against something the is right but is supposed to be wrong. I just don't get it.

It reminds me of the whole Patriot act debacle. I'm still trying to find concrete evidence of it abusing our rights & I just can't.

Okay, put it this way. Can Catholics wear the cross? Can Jews wear the Star of David? Laws are supposed to be fair and even handed, this one is arbitrary. It is strictly their business. It's mine if I want to point out how un-democratic it is.

Re the Patriot Act, what you say is entirely true. It takes very little in the way of imagination, however, to see what a terrifying precedent it sets. "I don't like that guy, think I'll anonymously tip off the feds that he's been seen giving money to muslim organizations." I understood why it was enacted, let it expire.

And stop grouping me as a liberal. I know you have this unfortunate need to put labels on everyone, but I am not now nor was I ever a liberal. I occasionally agree with them. I occasionally agree with the conservatives. I usually find either side's ideas to be half-baked, not very well thought out rhetoric with little or no real world application. It's a sound bite world, substance doesn't mean much anymore.

Gonz

Just wait, they'll destroy the other symbols too. They had to start somewhere. It wasn't personal against the Sikhs. I like it when they interfere with rights. It makes the Constitution that much stronger.

The Patriot Act is scary. The potential is very dangerous. Same with RICO & nobody else rails about that.

I didn't call you liberal. You read it that way. And if you look through all these posts, you'll find that I've been labeled plenty of times. It's human nature.

from the article originally posted it would appear that Sikhs are not being singled out, but I'm not sure how they'll decide what "large" is in terms of Christian crosses...

The law would ban all "conspicuous" symbols of faith - including Muslim veils, Jewish skullcaps, large Christian crosses and even, if they are considered signs of religious affiliation, beards and bandanas - from all state institutions, starting in September.

why would they need t follow that tradition? is it a tradition in France to not wear anything on the head? or religious symbols in general?
