To make this godawful pack of windbaggery tolerable I have devised a game.

Every time you hear the word 'democracy', you pour an ounce of beer into a glass. When you hit 10, you must drink.
Every time your hear something with the root word 'terror', you pour an ounce of wine. When you hit 5, you must drink.
Every time you hear the phrase 'American people', you pour 1/2 an ounce of liquor. When you hit a jigger (1.5 oz), you must drink.

Every time you hear the word 'freedom', you take your drink that is closest to the top and remove it from the table and start with a fresh glass.

Every time you hear the concept 'tax reduction', you take what whiskey you have on the penalty table and drop it into the beer as a boilermaker. The beer is now frozen in place and cannot be removed.

If you hear the phrase 'social security', you must down every drink across the board asap.

Surely you're not gonna just waste it?

What, more waste?

If you hear the phrase 'social security', you must down every drink across the board asap.

Including the frozen and removed ones?

Not at all. It just goes back into reserves until it is needed for future penalties.

What, more waste?
No, no... Frozen merely means that you cannot remove the glass from the table by hearing the word 'freedom' You wait until it is either full and drink or you hear 'social security' and drink everything.

Including the frozen and removed ones?
Frozen... yes
removed... no

the American people are showing that the state of our union is confident and strong.

I enjoyed the speech. I'm not sure what was more fun - listening and feeling that good ol' American red-blooded pride run through me everytime Dubya twinkled his eyes and said we're strong, or poking fun at the audience.

His speechgiving skills have definately improved. I commented to my husband that he must have practiced this one in front of a mirror - those smug looks and smirks were priceless!

Anyway, I thought it was very good. There's parts I don't necessarily agree with, and a few instances where I would have changed the wording a bit. But overall ... good.

I'd really be surprised if he doesn't get the next four years ...

I thought it sounded a little too much like a campaign speech for me, but his public speaking ability has improved, and every president I've ever watched has given a campaign speach for the state of the union in the last year of his first term. He likely will be reelected in the absence of any "smoking gun" evidence of wrongdoing. I doubt there is anyone here who doesn't understand my position on that. :D

Squiggy

I passed on the whole deal. Kinda obvious it would be a campaign speech...:D

on the best of years, the SOTU is laughable....More a party production than what its meant to be.

Rose, did you often find yourself overly emotional at highschool pep rallies? :D

did he say anything unexpected? I'm just curious, I don't want to read any transcripts, I'm too lazy, was it the status quo speak

strong, fight terror, stand tall, god?

Mostly status quo, I guess, Oz. It was rather good. We be americans. We kick ass. That kind of stuff.

I didn't listen as in-depth as I would have liked. And while I like the principle behind it, mostly, I probably would have chosen better wording to flip France the bird. *lol* *referencing - the 'permission slip'*

:( I never said I was a good cheerleader. Just a cheerleader. We didn't have football - only basketball to cheer for. So there was never much need or call for any type of fancy schmancy jumpin's and whatnot. Just plain ol' fashion cheering. Rah. Rah. Rah. :p

I took a pass on it as well. In fact, can't remember the last time I listened to a SOTU speech without feeling acutely embarrassed, regardless of which party was delivering it. It scares me how seriously some people actually take the insincere prattle of a loosely disguised campaign speech.

i used to smoke cigarettes under the bleachers during pep rally...same sentiment for the SOTU address.

Avoided pep rallies like the plague they were (in my high school they were a plague, honestly). You could usually find me in someone's basement, pupils dilated beyond the laws of physics, trying to talk about Carlos Castaneda and Aldous Huxley. :rofl3:
