Ed McMahon was the sidekick to Johnny Carson for like 30 Years. Johnny Carson was the king of the American late night talk shows and pretty much had no compettition before David Letterman came along. Carson retired a decade ago and gave the show over to Jay Leno... and Ed McMahon retired then as well.
